K3iii Charging - A Cautionary Tale

Yesterday evening the battery indicator was showing empty when I turned off the K3iii. This morning I attempted to recharge the battery in-camera. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. No red flashing light, no sign at all of anything happening. So I tried a different USB cable and different socket. Still nothing. So I changed the battery for a fully charged one and, with fingers firmly crossed, turned on the camera. It started up normally - to my great relief . Next step was to put the discharged battery into a battery charger. It started charging normally. After a couple of minutes I put it back in the camera and tried in-camera charging again. This time, it worked. It seems that in-camera charging will only work if the battery still as a little charge remaining. At a guess, the battery is needed to start up the circuit that handles charging.

So that's the tale.

And the caution? If you are away from home and relying on in-camera charging, always recharge the battery before it hits zero or you might find that you can't use the camera again until you get home and find the battery charger. But, of course, you always carry a spare, fully charged battery in case of emergency, don't you?

Thank you. I've never tried charging a battery while in any camera. I don't think I'll start now.

I've had a similar problem a couple of times and found that a good clean of the battery contacts was all that was needed.
