K3II Stress Test

Posted 20/11/2016 - 14:42 Link
Hi all

Further to Alan's (Blythman's) excellent couple of posts last week re the K1 and its impressive high ISO performance (in the right hands!), it occurred to me to stress test the K3II whilst I was down in Cornwall this week. ISO, and shake reduction too. All very unscientific. Just out of interest. So...

Both K3II, DA17-70, 17mm, f9.5. Shake Reduction On. Noise reduction etc. applied in Lightroom.

ISO 1600, 1/2 sec handheld (no propping up, leaning on anything. Just stood in pretty windy wind.)

ISO 9000 1/8 sec handheld (again, no propping up, leaning on anything. Just stood.)

They would struggle a bit blown up (esp the 1/2 sec shot, obvs), bit of smearing etc, but not at all bad I thought at screen resolution... plenty of food for thought on the "what's possible" front...

Yes, very good, it strikes me that the extra ISO and higher shutter speed are probably the most effective result, but having said that we are viewing these at very small sizes on the forum. The colours are very similar in both, which is an important factor if a high ISO is to remain usable.

Nice experiment Bill. Be nice to see a sunrise comparison, requiring a high dynamic range, of low and high ISO.

So impressive considering they are hand held in the wind, 1/2 sec really shows off the power of the water.

A good test and ISO 1600 stands up well. The technique would be very useful in a pinch for some subjects, but here I feel the environment demands a critical sharpness, which is missing. So nothing beats a tripod!

Very pleasing. Nice to know you can do this when you need/want to.
Best wishes,

Andrew

My thought exactly. Nigel's comment about tripod giving best quality is quite right, but the quality you can get just from handheld is illuminating!

Thanks for posting Bill.

Thanks all... yes, interesting experiment... Alan, good idea re sunrise... will have a go (if I remember) next time out... Nigel, fear not, I have a fair few with a tripod which I'll post over the next few weeks once I've had a proper look through ...

Thanks and best

Bill
