K3 locked up

I used the K3 yesterday (along with two other cameras) to cover a fashion shoot. Whilst adjusting AF settings on the rear info screen it locked up and would not switch off or respond to any inputs.

So I had no choice but to remove the grip and take out the camera battery, replace it and continue. I have never had that happen on any camera. So the quicker we get a firmware update the better.

It behaved itself for the rest of the day. I'm using it again today on another shoot and it should be OK as the settings are already as I want.

I've had the K5 lock up once using AF.c and the DA55-300 and I'm not the only one who had lockups with the K5. I usually don't use the DA55-300 on the K5 and I barely use AF.c

Maybe you can find a common denominator in AF.c

Just to join the party; I had a lock up with my K30. I could do nothing with it, not even switch it off. Removing and then replacing the battery did the trick. Not had a similiar problem since so put it down to a "glitch" in much the same way as we sometimes have this problem with computers!!

The K3 worked OK today, however, I didn't adjust anything on the info screen.

Has happened on my K7 a couple of times. Has always recovered after removing battery.

It happens every now and again with my K30. My attitude was basiclly "it's a computer" so nothing surprising. Removing and replacing the battery fixed it but I must admit if I was doing a wedding or something important it would unnerve me.

Had a lock up with K5 and Tamron 28 - 300. Removing the battery sorted it and it`s been fine since. I seem to remember (I think it was John Riley) that it could be a static electricity issue.

My K-5 has the same occasional issue. It seems to be a common Pentax problem.

For what it's worth my Nikon D200 and D300 used to lock up frequently no matter what lens I had on, grip or no grip. I also went to Paris for 5days with 3 fully charged batteries and only managed to get just over 400 shots.

As has been mentioned, DSLR's are computers so the odd malfunction and need of a reboot is inevitable, it certainly is not just a Pentax problem.

My K3 froze when reviewing an image. It is the first time that i have used it with the grip attached. I wonder if that had any influence.

Mine did exactly the same thing, but without a grip attached. Had the side effect of not remembering the last used settings when the battery was reinserted.

You really make me laugh. At least you will not be surprised if the ABS in your car stops working

Although it can't be excluded, that was very unlikely in my situation.

I think you'll find it's a common dslr problem and not unique to Pentax. Do a search for "canon d lockup problem" and you'll find pages on the issue!

Then change the search for "nikon lockup problem"

I recommend doing this before posting remarks that could potentially put off a customer.

I've had a string on Pentax DSLRs since the *istDS and never once have any of them locked up.

It's just possible that the dark frame subtraction delay after taking a low light shot with a long shutter speed might be mis-interpreted as a lock up. Sometimes we're not very patient and the camera might be busy.

There have been occasions of lockups and it is well documented, I have a replacement K-5iis because the first one locked up on me three separate times. I was not taking shots in any demanding light, was not doing long exposures, and was not taking a burst of shots. The camera made a small "chirping" noise as it attempted to (I believe) lift the mirror then "Battery Depleted" appeared on the rear screen and the camera shut itself off, the battery was new and fully charged. The camera stayed in this state the first time for a couple of hours and started working fine again later (no it was not hot). The second time it happened it lasted a little longer and the third time for more than a day. SRS sent it to JP Solutions and loaned me a K-5 while it was gone, I then received a message that said a replacement camera was ready for dispatch.
But I repeat, it is not unique to Pentax!
Your record with Pentax is extraordinary John, you seem to have been very lucky as you have never had a single issue and amazingly never had to AF fine tune any of your lenses either, you are a very lucky man indeed.
