K3 locked up

With BMW very progressed in developing a self drive car I does make you wonder!

OFF is not OFF ! There are still some functions and sensors working even then.

Even with the battery out date, time and personal settings are remembered. So is there another power source in the camera?

I suspect the camera has Eeprom memory to store certain settings. This type of memory is non-volatile, i.e. it retains its settings even when power is completely removed.

I once had a Fiat Uno Turbo - the ABS didn't work on that, in fact it stopped the brakes working altogether and almost caused a major accident!

Settings are retained only for a period of time usually, which suggests a rechargeable power source good for a few days. If there wasn't some power or some non-volatile memory, we might not be able to change batteries without losing all our settings.

The *istD had a button cell for this purpose and the 645 a built in Lithium battery that needed changing every 5 years or so.

NVRAM for settings and a capacitor that keeps the "clock ticking" for a year or two.

There are other parts which will use power from the battery if it is installed. The On/Off switch for example is not a switch on the power line but there is detection circuitry at work.

There is a rechargeable lithium cell in the camera which keeps the clock going. Settings are written into a non-volatile memory. The lithium cell is really cr*p - rated at only 100 cycles. So do not store your camera with the main battery removed

I was out yesterday with the K3, grip and 100-300mm Ex Sigma. Quite early on whilst in single shot mode it burst into full speed just after taking a shot. I switched it off, to no effect and then immediately started to undo the grip with the intention of removing the camera battery.

The camera was in full high speed mode shooting like there's no tomorrow. As soon as I got the grip released it stopped! I re-attached the grip and switched back on. It behaved itself for the rest of the days shooting.

So just not sure if it's a bug with the grip attached or what?

Not just that.

I've had this happen on a K5-IIs and my current K3, once on each, can't remember the shooting mode but did have the official grip on both.

It's anoying when it happens but modern cameras are mini computers and are prone, just like your laptop or PC to get their knickers in a twist now and again

As long as it stays once in a while I'm not too bothered, when (and if) it becomes a regular occurrance will be the time to send it off to Pentax and do some moaning

It is the mirror slap issue as no shots were recorded.

Lets hope Ricoh are looking into it.

OTOH, the camera is supplied from new without the main battery fitted, and first consumer use could be many months from last factory tests, so how would you explain that being OK?

Just put a main battery in the K-R & switched it on after 4 months or so (been using mainly the K-30 in the meantime)and it had lost all its customised settings - so 1 year may well be an over-estimate.

My first K3 locked up, but even worse as I was shooting bracketed exposures, the camera made 5 exposures and then proceeded to fire off continuously at high speed - only way to stop it was by removing the battery. Tried it again - same result. Although shutter was firing no exposures were recorded. Camera returned and replaced - it had other problems too. Replacement camera locks up as described here. I was out today and it locked up three times in a two hour period: only way to resolve problem was by removing battery. Seems like something is amiss, but it seems to affect all makes too. Another strange thing happened the other night. I was downloading photos directly from the camera with a USB3 lead when I noticed that it seemed to be taking a long time: There was around 500 exposures and the download was continually recycling so that at the end of the 500 it would start again and download the same exposures again - it did this 3 times before I realised. Again, battery need to be removed to stop it.

My K-5II locked up today, first time in 18 months of use.

Removed grip and then battery from body and all is well again.
