K20d - freezing

Hi, has anyone else experienced the following with a K20d.......

Switch it on, take a few pics and it freezes up. Switch it off (digital display stays on) and the only way to clear the problem is to remove and replace the battery. Also the pictures taken not written to the card - instead purple and yellow lines?

Thanks

forgot to mention happens only occasionally and randomly.

That doesn't sound good, Have you tried leaving the battery out for a while :

Try a different SD card also, not sure if it will help but it can't hurt.

You could probably try reinstalling the firmware as a last resort. good luck with it.

bizarre - tried on all 5 memmory cards (mainly Sandisk - all fine, except the Lexar 8Gb - which works perfectly in the K-m.)

Fickle thing!

Cheers guys -

Try reformatting the card in the K20D. Also did the card come from a good known source?

Came from PC world - 1/2 price. I'll let you decide of the reputability of the source...

Bizarrely works fine in the K-m, but the K20d, isn't having any of it, even after formatting in the body. Ho-hum, not to worry i can live with it. I assume k20d's can copewith 8Gb cards or larger - hope so given a raw file is 24 Megabytes!!"

Only if you use DNG as far as I'm aware - my PEF images tend to be a bit smaller than that (~18-19Mb) so if you're often running out of space that might be an option.

I'm not sure it helps but we have been around this before here.

My K20D has had similar lock-ups but they never happened very often and removing & refitting the battery fixed the problem. I think the manual mentions this, see John's comment in the linked thread.

Glyn,

thanks but that REALLY did help............ did a search earlier, before postinfg the thread, but obviously put the wrong words in..........

Funnily enough, mine was on remote trigger setting, and then switching on only had a problem with the 8Gb card when shotting using the button to take the pic....

Since then, have reset to normal instead of remote and a 4Gb card... must have fired 200 shots tonight, just to try to kill it, and get similar results as to the linked thread - lilac and yellow......... can I make it happen? No.

Given as I bought it as ex demo body only on Tues for £349......... and had 311 shutter actuations at time of purchase (my first pic run through exifinfo)...... will live with it!!!!

Read Manual / Instructions? I have Y Chromosomes!

Hi Lynton,

Just saw your post tonight, Glyn posted a link to my original posting.

Guess what...? It happened again, just a couple of days ago, taking pics out in the freezing snow and got a white screen, nothing happening, just switched off and back on... No problems.

I've just lived with it, right or wrong!

Hope this all helps.
Cheers

Just out of interest, is there an UPPER limit for SD cards in these cameras !? Just checked my K10 manual and spec stops at 4GB !!

Could it be they are not equipped to handle above 4GB ??
4GB is another threshold point, as was 1GB some years ago !!

I use 4GB and have never tried above

SD cards only go up to 4GB. SDHC cards go above 4GB. Lots of older electronics devices will accept SD cards but not SDHC ones, I have a cheap Goodmans portable DVD player with that limitation.
