K200D - First image overexposed

Posted 02/10/2024 - 09:08 Link
My Pentax K200D works correctly, BUT
When I turn it on, the first image is always overexposed (too clear)
Exif aperture and speed of first image are the same as next takes of the same image.

I have tested many ways to solve this issue.
- Use normal batteries instead of rechargeable
- Disable AF and stabilisation
- Change lens
- Clean lens electrical contacts
- Turn back to factory settings
- Test various AE settings (spot, full view,..
None of these is working.
Any idea?

Sounds like a sticky solenoid issue which the K200D is known for, unfortunately the issue will only get worse.

Check out the link, others on PU may be able to elaborate

Solenoid failure??
Not sure, because only the first image after I switch the camera on is affected.
As long as I dont switch off it works like a charm.

My understanding from reading similar issues on this and other forums, and I've not had a camera suffer this issue, is what your seeing is the start of the failure.

May be,
but after reading a few threads about this issue it seems that it's usually the opposite.
Most of users are reporting the first image to be too dark while it's too clear on my K200D

After reading a few more threads:
- I get overexposed first image while usually the "solenoid syndrom" produces dark images. This is strange. Did somebody got the same issue?
- An original solenoid from this supplier https://www.ebay.fr/str/photontech?_trksid=p4429486.m3561.l161211 is quite expensive, nearly the same as an old second hand camera with original solenoid.
I have an old Pentax K100D that I could dismantle and take the solenoid off.
Do you know if K100D is fitted with the original solenoid from Japan or the cheap one from China?

You don't mention what lens you are using. I have had the odd lens, (my DFA 100 macro when new for example), where the aperture has been slow to to close down - leading to over-exposure. Indeed I had to send that particular lens in for repair.

I had the same ‘sticky aperture’ problem with my DFA 100 Macro so sent it for cleaning and this cured the problem.
Good luck with your problem.

I've never heard of solenoid failure on the K200D. The K200D predates the dodgy solenoids used in later entry-level cameras.

If the photo has the same settings as the next, which is properly exposed, then either there is some failure in closing down the lens (easily tested by shooting wide open) or the shutter is slow.
