I've just seen on the Pentax web site that the Grad ND function is available to purchase in the UK.

Decisions, decisions.

I'd like to see more examples of the same scene shot using different strengths of grad

I didn't know premium functions even existed!

You could buy a decent Used lens for the price they are asking

You can buy a Cokin XL Nuances ND Grad for 5 quid more....

Actually.... with Pentax discount it's 67 quid!

I think that it would be better if it was just a variable built in ND filter and not graduated
Something like 3 stops to 16 stops range for tripod use
I have that on my old compact Lumix LX 7 and its fantastic.
Just my tuppence, I would probably buy that version

They can't add a variable ND filter to the cameras as it'd need a physical element added to it.

This is a sensor and processing trick which works a bit like the HDR setting from my understanding.

Yes. It saves you the bother of taking a couple of images and doing a grad ND merge in post-processing and it lets you see the result in situ rather than after you get home then realising you've got it wrong. You could, of course, take one shot with a grad ND filter on the front of the lens. However, you'd actually need many grad ND filters to replace the full range of possibilities with the new Grad ND function, so the price they are asking might actually be quite reasonable.

Some Pentax Q lenses have a built-in ND filter (non-grad), activated from camera. Only a couple of stops but can be useful.

I meant once the cameras have been produced/sold we can't add a full ND filter mode to them (ISO 100 is the lowest the sensor can use so there's no way of slowing the shutter speed down further)

It is possible to use the merging of multiple shots to get an effect very similar to an ND filter, I think some Olympus bodies have this feature.

Pentax cameras can already do that with multi exposure/ interval composite settings (Additive, Average and Bright), see the link below:
