Use a tripod
Delayed shutter release, us remote.
Use the lens wide open.
Take a least 5 shots manually turning the focusing ring to different positions between shots.
For a zoom lens repeat at different focal lengths. Some lenses FF at one end and BF at the other.
View the results on your PC screen. Decide whether the lens is front , or back focusing and a
djust accordingly. I usually make a large adjustment repeat the excercise several times progressively making fine adjustments until I am happy with the results.
Alternatively, if you have a macro slide rail there is an alternative method that if I remember Algernon has described.
Finally don't forget to take some real world pictures, before deciding on your final setting.

OK, Well I've got as far as getting into debug mode and viewing the relevant menus. I don't think I'll have the time to do this properly before I go away ( Saturday), but at least I know the principle works.
One thing I did find is that a small instruction is missing on that second link.
Create a file in Notepad called MODSET.TX
Then in the file just one line [OPEN_DEBUG_MENU] then hit ENTER
It won't work if you don't hit enter.

I had a quick fiddle tonight. I concentrated on the Tamron 70 - 300mm and the Pentax 28 - 80mm lenses as they are what I most often use with this camera.
I had to apply +200um.
It has made the world of difference!
I can't test properly as the light has gone, but the couple I took outside in the low light are much better. The 28-80 still doesn't focus to infinity at 28mm, but it's near as damn it.
I'll play some more when I get back off holiday.

Adjusting AF isn't going to fix tungsten inconsistencies, but it's better to be inconsistent around the actual focus point rather than somewhere behind or in front. thanks Steve that's good to know, I'll probably still try both types of light but if I can't get a consistant reading under tungsten I'll know why!

Do your AF tweaks in daylight.

For manual lenses take a number of shots where you've achieved by moving the focus ring from way OOF to what the camera says is focus confirmation for each shot
For AF lenses take a number of shots by letting the AF try to achieve focus from either infinity or nearest focus distance, preferably both.
then ... note any front or back focussing and adjust accordingly
