I'd look at what you want from the upgrade. I have a K100D, and it's great; good photos, easy to use. A K10D will most likely be second hand. Nothing wrong with that of course, but if you can afford to buy new you'd have the confidence of a warranty, which would be 2 years if you bought from a Pentax Pro dealer like SRS. A K10D would certainly give you more control over your photography, and should give you improved picture quality as well.

I was looking to buy the k100D as my first SLR, was it released recently or is there going to be a newer model soon?

Sarah, you should look at the new Pentax K-X which has just been released as an entry level DSLR, choice of colours too on a very good camera. I think the K100D has been discontinued. There is speculation that the K-M will now be selling quite cheaply. Welcome to the forum BTW.

The K100D is now out of production so unless you're thinking of buying a used example you've missed that boat I'm afraid. The new entry level model is the K-x which has just been announced in the last week and should be shipping in October - nobody has got their hands on one yet but on paper the specs look very good indeed.

That's a tough one to answer without knowing what your level of experience is or what sort of photography you're hoping to be doing. With many K20D's going up for sale as people "upgrade" to K-7's then there are certainly bargains to be had, but coming from a K100D you may not want the extra weight and complexity.
