K100D or K10D - Am I missing something?

I am a proud owner of a K100D bought 6 months ago. I think its a brilliant camera with its kit lens and a Tamron 70-300. I'm still exploring its potential, or my potential more like it, but having read a lot of comments in this forum on many subjects I'm getting the feeling that I really should have bought a K10D or even a K20D. Am I missing something that these other models have that will suddenly turn my photos into something wonderful:

No, sadly, they cant turn your photographs into something wonderful. Only you can do that.

I was happy with my old *istD, it did all I needed. At 6 MPixel the images were big enough to be printed in 50 x 75 cm (with some upscaling).

So why did I get the K20 then?
It came down to shake reduction (I really saw that as a big advantage) first and foremost. Ok, I thought that after 5 years the technology has moved on a bit and I would get more dynamic range and lower noise on high ISO shots as well (and this I certainly got with the K20).
And, of course, this only is the rational side of the story. Figure in the "I want one" factor and you got the reason why I got it.

As others have pointed out; "no" is the answer.

You can make photos every bit as good as a K10/20D with your current camera (albeit at a slightly lower resolution), however, I do think the additional body-based buttons and controls on the 10/20 - together with a lack of scene modes - makes experimentation more likely than having things tucked away in menus. It's mainly by experimentation that your skills will develop.

Try setting your K100D to fully manual operation and leave it there for a week. Wander around the house/office/pub shooting anything that moves (or doesn't move) and then study your pictures on your computer along with their relative EXIF data. It's like stepping back in time 30 years but once you master the basics you'll find your understanding of how to take great photos comes on in leaps and bounds.

the k100d is a super camera and the only thing the k200d or k10d have is weather proofing and 10 meg instead of 6 meg
a had a k100d super before and the difference between the 2 in picture quality is nothing at all to be honest i even had a sony a350 which is 14,2 meg and regreted buying it as the pics on the k100d super where better and the sony was very noisey at iso 400 which is why i went for k200d in end.
all i will say is buy a decent lens the standard lens aint that good and you will be happier.

I think this may be the only reason for abandoning a perfectly good camera and getting something 'better'. I admit to being a gadget freak and can see myself getting a K20D or its successor simply because it has a few things that I might use given the right circumstances, that is, as Scottthehat said, weatherproofing and higher pixel count, cos I'm going to be shooting in the rain and blowing my pics up to fill the side of the house

In the meantime I'll take some of Hefty1's advice and put it on manual like I used to with the old Olympus OMN2.

You might enjoy the pentaprism and extra control wheel of a K10/20D.

I wouldn't rush into upgrading, though, as the price of the K20D will fall further as it gets older. You get the best VFM just before a model is discontinued!

I agree with all the comments above. Particularly Iceblinkers. Coming from the ist DS with very good penta prism viewfinder, I decided to pass on the mirror versions which I found a bit dim and jumped to the K20D with numerous additional features. All of the K20D features are great. However, I won't get rid of the DS. Its lighter for travelling in particular.

I have a K100d ,and have tryed all the modes only thing left is the Manual mode, so after reading this, it's on manual , my wife thinks I mad cause I'm taking pictures of everything, I have noticed already it seems to make quite a difference to the pictures and I have started writing down certain settings, I can't see why I havent done this before,
I would like a K20, however I may wait until they bring out a K30,40!!!!,so the price becomes reasonable.

My K100d is getting tired and it was second hand when I bought it, so I'm going for a new K200d, "god knows I deserve it", for the hours I put in, weather proofing and the few extra pixels will do me just fine, I think the K200d has a few more bits to play with , my existing K100d was one of the first released, so I'll keep it as a spare.

Having recently recently purchased a GX10 and being of a delicate nature I have to say I find it a heavy camera, with the 18-250 attached, to carry round all day. I can stick my K100D in my shoulder bag and hardly notice it's there. But it's nice having a new toy to play with!

Not totally made up my mind yet you see I've been loaned by a camera shop I use a Nikon D60 with 18~55VR & a 18~200VR lenses to play with for a week, and I have say I'm smitten, similar spec to the K200d, so Mr Pentax if you read these messages now would be a good time to offer me a really ground breaking deal.

how much is the nikon 18-200mm vr lens, last time i looked i think it was £400, and prices have gone up s*it loads since then, i will stick with pentax,

I love my k100 D but still bought the k 10 for the extras but still use the k100 D alot. I did notice a difference when shooting portraits at the dog show the k 10 did produce more coat detail in the dog than the k 100 D when shooting with my Tamron lens.

Hi Scott, with the 18~55vr It's £359, the deal I have is with the 18~200 only,is £390, I know the 200 has 11 point metering and the Nikon has 3 point metering , I only use center weighted so that's not an issue,
I was also reading today samsung GX10 is really a Pentax K10 rebadged, this is all getting confusing . I'm tempted to have a change, My daughter is after the K100d sigma and kit lens, at 10 years old she is keen on photography so guess where the k100d going.
