K100 with M lenses

Suppose I put one of my M lenses ( M 1.4 50 mm) is put on a digital reflex (looking at the K100D right now), with the aperture set to 8.0, is the diaphragm open or closed when the lens is mounted on the camera? How should I measure light? (aperture set to 1.4 ?, shutter speed manual only ?).

Just trying to find out if it is worth to use my primes on a digital reflex.

You press the green button next to the shutter and it closes the aperture diaphragm to take a meter reading and sets the shutter speed. You can then adjust this manually as you would do usually. Works fine on my K10D with the few M lenses I have tested. Other people have trouble with the K10D. As far as I am aware the K100D handles M lenses perfectly.

I tend to think of it the same way as using the old SLRs like the Spotmatic. It is just another form of stopdown metering because the meter doesn't know what aperture you have set.

I'm not sure I quite get how this work.

I have a 50mm F2.0 M lens. It takes very good pictures - but I'm not sure which aperture it is using. I guess I'm shooting all in F2, because nothing happens when i turn the aperture ring to another level.

I read about this is some other thread - and read about this stop down.....

So I tried to put my two cent in this - not sure I got i yet.

If I put my f2.0 50mm on - and push the green button - the camera sets the shutterspeed - right?

Since I cannot change the aperture - I only change the shutterspeed - right? One step (slower) to jump one step on the aperture - or am I wrong?

Please help...

on the k10 you can also use the preview dial, pull this around to the right and it brings up the lightmeter. as you hold this dial in place you can adjust shutter speed with the front or rear dial (depending on setup).
Please call me aj,

I use a Pentax K10D, on a MacBook with LightRoom (vers 1.3 + beta 2)

You need to set a Custom Function "Using Aperture Ring" to "Permit".

Then you can set an aperture on the lens.

For the K100D the procedure is then something like this:

Set camera to manual, switch to MF and select SR. Then switch on the camera and you will be prompted as to what focal length you are using. Select this and you are ready to go.

Set aperture. Half press shutter release to activate meter and hold half pressed. Press AE-L button to stop down lens. Sets shutter speed appropriately. Complete shutter release.

Perhaps K100D owners would check I haven't miissed anything out there as that was from memory.
Best regards, John

Not sure if its not working then - I had my aperture ring on permit in the custom menu.

My aperture symbol said -- on the camera and in the viewfinder.

You sure I can see the F-value in the viewfinder and on the camera when the aperture ring is permitted?

Whats the stopdown method then?

I'm confused now.....

Sounds like it's working fine.

The camera cannot read the aperture from the lens, unless the lens is set to A (which K and M lenses don't have). So the "--" in the viewfinder is as you'd expect.

To meter, set the camera to manual, select your aperture on the lens, and press the green button, as Tyr said earlier. If the K100D is the same as the K10D in this respect, it will stop the lens down, take a meter reading, and set the appropriate shutter speed.

I'm using the K10D - Is that what you replied about?

You say - take a meter reading. So the camera does not set the shutter when you push the green button or?

on the K10D

set the aperture on the lens
press the green button
the camera will then stop down and take a meter reading ..and it will set the shutter speed.
You must be in Manual exposure mode for this.

As an alternative , you can turn on (and hold on) the DOF preview and adjust the meter by changing aperture (on the lens) or shutter speed. You need to be in manual exposure to do this also.

You can use the Av mode in a limited fashion. The camera will set the shutter speed according to the available light, but you will be shooting at wide open only....irrespective where you have set the f stop on the lens.

Thanks Peter. That answered my questions perfectly.

I shoot in Av-mode - so thats why I had the same shutterspeed all along

I assume you mean "same shutter speed for the same lighting conditions". In Av mode the camera will change the shutter speed to get the correct exposure, only problem being that it will only work at widest aperture.

Good luck with using the old "K" and M lenses on the K10. I use them all the time....love the feel of them and the quality is as good as it was when I first bought my M 50mm f1.7 new in 19....whatever (I was quite young)

Thanks again

Sorry to raise this one once again. I have a K100D which I have been using with a good old SMC 50mm 1.7 and an Adaptall 90 mm 2.5 macro.

The procedure I follow is to set focus to MF and mode to M. Then I select an aperture on the lens, half press and release the shutter then press AE-L. I hear it stop down the lens, I see it adjust the shutter speed, I then fully press the shutter. All is well with the lens fully open but as I stop down to get more depth of field the image becomes more and more under exposed. The exposure time does increase as you'd expect to compensate for the smaller aperture but not enough to give a properly exposed image.

I'd like to be able to follow this sort of regime so I can fire the shutter by remote control to avoid camera shake with the macro lens.
