When you say "software", what are you looking for? Do you mean the firmware updates, or the photo-editing suite that comes with that camera?
Oh, and welcome to the forum!!

If you use Photoshop, or an alternative, then you don't really need to load the camera software unless you want to.
A card reader will happily transfer the images to the computer and any fairly recent version of Photoshop will recognise the files.

Hi,
I was never very impressed with what came on the disc. You don't even need a card reader just use a USB lead
Plenty of free and cheap Apps to get you started in the Windows 8 store while you listen to all the free streaming music. I personally use Serif Photoplus though. A free version of that to try too online.

Hi all - thank you for the replies. I am still new to using a digital slr having moved on from a compact.
I have got photoshop elements 10, so I presume I shoot in raw ? than load into photoshop if I want to do anything with it ?
I don't want to get too complicated - I am preparing for a trip to the Northern Lights in Feb and want to be able to bring back some memories and show off to others
Thanks again.
Steve.

If you have Photoshop Elements 10 , its all you need to be getting on with, yes most people find it best to shoot in raw to get the best results processing photos , i think with the K-x you have the option to shoot in both raw and jpeg so you have a copy of each ,something to think about when your first starting out , but it will not take long before your just shooting with raw.Hi all - thank you for the replies. I always shoot in JPEG+RAW, which I regard as equivalent to processed photos (JPEG) + negatives (RAW).
The JPEG settings in-camera are adjusted to my preferance, but having the RAW available gives me a chance to play with/adjust/crop/etc any shots that my usual JPEG settings have not worked with.
Ok, you end up with fewer shots/gb on your memory card, but memory cards are cheap enough.
Your K-x will 'do' RAW+, so why not?
