K-5 Sloooow Lo Speed continuous shooting

One of the happy pursuits I follow is photographing birds and I hope to improve at this as time goes by. At what point I become a "birder" I do not know.

However, it looks like variable setting would be better as by removing 1.6fps we'll upset those who use it. I don't know what they use it for, but no doubt somebody does.

Yes variable would be even better of course.

Perhaps I should have attached a poll. Do you use 1.6fps? Or perhaps "is 1.6fps satisfactory?"

My 50D has 6 or 3 fps and the latter is just right most of the time, I only use 6 for really fast moving objects such as jets and suchlike, 3 is used for the powerboats and slower propeller driven aircraft.

The slow drive is also useful for macro stacking, 6 is way too fast.

I'll do that this (Oz) evening.

I thought 5fps on my K-7 was good for sport but for catching that "peak of the action" moment the K-5 7fps should be better - AF permitting.

The K-7 Lo speed of 3fps I've found is excellent for general use including sport but 1.6fps feels like I could roll a smoke between frames! When I first used Lo speed on the K-5 I waited & waited (it seemed like forever) . thinking there was a problem with the camera. Finally it fired, another wait of half an aeon & it fired again. It was so slow I thought it must be 1fps!

I have to see say I've used continuous shooting at any speed. I oughta remember next time I'm snapping and some fast moving action appears.

OK, OK, Smeggy; you must have noticed my local village is Nimbin the most alternative village in Oz & our marijuana capital.

A friend taught me to leave my camera on continuous & the 3fps of my K-7 was ideal.

I suppose it's not a bad idea, as the 'continuous' is always available just by leaving your finger on the shutter a it longer. I must try this approach.

It works a treat Smeggy.

I just tested it and found that it's not 1.6fps it's 1.6 seconds between shots. So if your shutter speed is 1 sec then it'll be '1s' + '1.6s' + 'shutter lag time' fps

It's probably faster to just keep pressing the shutter button manually

A quick test shooting in RAW reveals my K-5 struggles to reach 1.4fps.

What card specs?
At >20Mb per image, you'll need 40Mb per second write performance to get 2fps in RAW

e.g. the Samsung Extreme SDHC cards I use are rated at 20MB/s write

Class 10 SanDisk. My K-7 could do 3fps with no dramas on Low speed & 5fps on High speed - AF permitting. There is little difference between K-7 & K-5 file sizes.
