Third Party Batteries for K5

is the K5 Battery the same as the k7?
7 day shop have some very reasonably priced batteries and I should reallly look into getting some ordered.

If your after third parties look on flea bay. There are plenty of offers at about £10 postage free for 2 batteries. Even grips + 2 batteries for £45 ish - post free.

I have one, (grip + batteries), and the quality is sound. Arrived 6 days after order placed, post free also marked as sample so no UK tax to pay.

A firend of mine a while ago asked me to sell his GX20 on eBay and sent it along to me complete with five batteries.

Two were Pentax ones and three couldn't be identified because all the printing had worn off them. They looked a wreck. The two Pentax ones were almost unmarked. This sort of thing to me indicates a particular quality level for these items, and in the case of the cheap batteries it could be very debateable what we were buying. Those are the ones I expect to leak or burst into flames.

However, nothing is guaranteed, and it is true that of the five batteries the only one that wouldn't charge was one of the Pentax ones.

Despite that, I still buy OEM batteries for everything. Obviously that's not possible with AA batteries, but then we are talking recognised quality brands as appropriate.

I bought a couple of the K-7 batteries when I had the camera (and still have them for the K-5). They worked fine although I always kept the original in the camera and the cheap ones in the grip.

OEM is a very misleading term? A copy of OEM Windows XP would mean a Dell branded copy etc. see Wikipedia

I've got 4 batteries for my K20D The two Pentax branded ones work perfectly. The other only do about 50 shots so Pentax batteries seem better in the long run.

I have both Pentax Batteries and 3rd party batteries for my K10D and K20D. there's no difference in performance between them.

My comment about batteries bursting into flames was a generalised one about batteries. This can and does happen, but thankfully very rarely and not usually with branded batteries. However, excpetions again, because Sony had a batch of laptop batteries that were extremely suspect and some did burst into flames.

Now they had to accept liability for that, but if it had been a third partly battery then the sanswer would have been that you should use their batteries and not alternatives and they would have had no responsibility.

So when a battery leaks under warranty, it would be better if it's a Pentax one if we want a warranty repair of the camera!

Not just Sony quite a few Apple products have gone up in flames..

Of your 3 links, one isn't about an Apple product at all, one is from 2007, and one is from 2009 (from the Inquirer, no less :lol but concerning a 4 year old battery, which appears to have been recalled but said recall was ignored by the owner.

A little tip for you: Apple don't make their own batteries.

I doubt that many companies have a battery division making batteries, but what I do expect is that they source them to precise and approved standards. And that they test them.

Yes, I'm sure they do. But when you sell something like 8 million laptops a year there are bound to be a few duds.

The Sony-manufactured batteries you are referring to were used in Apple's Powerbook 5300 line in the mid 90s, famously referred to as the 'Hindenbook' line as so many of those Sony-made batteries caught fire!

Edit: 8 million is an estimate based on memory. Don't quote me on it

To develop that point a little, you might also hope these batteries are not being made by children in extremely unsafe conditions with toxic substances being mishandled etc.

I asked this same question about 6 weeks ago and had very similar advice that's been posted above. To boost my power needs, I bought a 3rd Pentax one and also picked up 2 of the £6.99 jobbies off ebay with free postage. I've not noticed any difference at all between the Pentax and the cheapies, although as a preference I'm using the Pentax ones first and the cheapies when I've run out of juice. I need to be away from mains power for a good few days to be needing to run the cheapies - nice to have the back-up though when I need it...
