As a rough guideline what speeds would you suggest the SR becomes unnecessary?
The old rule of thumb is to use a shutter speed equal or faster than 1/focal length. E.g. for a 50mm lens use 1/50 s or faster.
And allow for crop factor I believe. So a 50mm becomes a 75mm equivalent (50mm x 1.5). So, 1/75 sec or faster.

The Pentax manuals explain that this figure is modified by the crop factor. So a 50mm lens, for example, with its "35mm equivalent" of 75mm needs 1/75sec or faster.

Of course even this may not be enough unless we take care, so to be sure some photographers double this again to 1/150sec.

As an experiment, try fast shutter speeds on and off a tripod and the critically sharp ones may still be the ones with the tripod.

You can't apply the same rule of thumb to everybody as you get older you need to use a faster speed 20 years ago I used to regularly use 1/8th second with 6x6 on weddings (candlelight. church interiors etc. ) nowdays I don't think I could go below /100th although I haven't noticed much shake recently on 400mm and 500mm lenses at 1/200th plus SR ON.

Speaking of rules of thumb, there were a couple of birds in the garden half an hour ago relaxing in the sun, so I grabbed the K-5 set it to 200ISO and fired off a few shots on aperture priority..... I can't believe I've overexposed them in bright sunlight 1/250th f/9 With the K20D I would have just manually set 1/400th f/9 and it would have been spot on That's brought about by using different ISO's with the K-5. I've got them as DNG's so they will pull back

I'm glad I read this thread - a well needed reminder of the pros and cons of stabilisation, it also possibly provides some explanation of why my recent panning shots of the Welsh Three Castles rally didn't turn out as good as hoped - I left stabilisation on which I'm now inclined to think I shouldn't have.

Top man for posting this Smeggy, I thought maybe the SR was not as good as on my K10D.

If you suspect that SR not being stabilised may be the cause of images apparently having camera shake, run them through PhotoMe and look for the two entries "SR Result" and "Shake Reduction (Setup)" under the Manufacturers notes section.

"SR Result" should show "Stabilised", and "Shake reduction (Setup)" should show "On".

That's interesting. I have two images one blurred and one not at 100% crop Intend(ed) to post as an example. I'll check the EXIF in Photome.

I think once it has kicked in the SR works very well, it's just that half second when it starts up I think. Using SR in video mode or live view (where it is always 'on') you can really see how movement is dampened, and it has never caused an issue in Live View.
This is the problem, the time it takes to stabilise. It's more than 1/2 second if you swiftly pan the camera to another subject. In live view you can see it slowly centering the sensor

hmmmm. checked both pics and they both show stabilised. one pic clearly isn't

I'd like a firmware update to manually override SR settings so I could set in a multiplier for SR, 4 options in the menu 1.4x, 1.5x, 1.7x and 2x. That should cover all TC's in use and optimise SR for the focal length actually in use

John
Why not just the option that shuts the SR off if the speed is fast enough?

Because it would be nice to have it working correctly when the speed is not fast enough. That's the whole point of SR, or am I missing something

I don't think anybody is saying this is a problem, just defining how the SR works to best advantage.

Now that you know that SR was not to blame, you need to start looking at other causes, like: Shutter speed too slow or, subject moving too fast or, operator really should not have gone to the pub before the event.

That's what I mean with fast enough.
Something like the speed is 2x as fast as the focal length you're using, that should do the trick don't you think?
So for example if you're using 50mm and use a time of 1/100 it's still on but at 1/160 it's off. 1/160 is certainly fast enough for that focal length right?

And if the speed get's slower again the SR will turn back on again.
It shouldn't be that hard to build something like that in.
You notice that with AV it tries to keep the shutter speed the same as your focal length as well.
