good afternoon. I recently discovered ghastly smears on my photos. this is with the 50-135mm, but other lenses show the same.

one smear is visible below the horizon, about 1/3 between the ferry and the sun.

has anybody any idea what this is and how to get rid of it?

TIA

I would assume that your sensor has dust on it. You can perform a dust verification test available through the k5 menu. Quite strait forward. Some sensors from the k5 have had problems with markings that i am aware of, but this has probably occurred during lens changing in dusty conditions. I would suggest you take it into your nearest pro shop for a clean, or have a go yourself with a rocket blower.

dust verification? I haven't seen that one. the cleaning procedure at startup is to 'on'.

I'll have a look at the menu again this evening.

thks for the suggestion

I am not sure how accurate the system works but after seeing your photo there is no doubt that there is dust on your image. I wouldn't rely too much on the dust cleaning on start up. Get that boy into the store for a clean. If you need any advice on doing it yourself let me know. Good luck

Smears aren't dust though and a smear like that you can propably see with the naked eye.
For smears it's best to use a wet method to clean them, so it's time to get some swaps.

The 'smears' are almost certainly caused by dust, tiny little fibres of it by the look of it. Have cured similar with the rocket blower, although it's best to be very careful with the rocket blower as you can get the dust all over the place, up into the viewfinder etc.

I agree with what you say. For me the apparent "smear" is certainly a particle fibre (have seen many of them in the past). From experience I would buy a rocket blower (no other, they are the best).

Follow this procedure, step by step. Worst thing that could happen is you blow more dust around and in the end you have to take it into a pro shop to get it fixed). Mount your camera on a tripod, position the camera so that it is facing downward, remove your lens, go into the menu and select sensor clean, while the sensor is exposed move the tip of the rocket blower into the camera very carefully at a safe 1cm distance from the sensor, then blow like rocket like mad, rest your hand a bit and blow again like mad, proceed for a few minutes then close the sensor, remount you lens, at this stage verify your success by shooting at a blank white wall with a high shutter speed, upload your shot onto your computer and from there you will verify the removal of the dust.

If have used this technique many times and have always had success (with my K10). This method I have found work well to others, as it permits all the dust to drop out the camera body rather than simply moving the particles around as is seen with other techniques.

If you have no luck then Avnh may be right. Then youll need a swab clean at your local shop.

Good luck
