K-3 shutter Count...

In 2013, I bought the silver addition of the K-3 pentax. Within the first year I did have some problems with the shutter flapping ....going crazy like a possessed camera. I sent it in for fixing, and it behaved well for a while, then within a few months it had another attack (honestly it is like attack) ....So it was sent away again, and for a while behaved itself, until the 2 year warranty was up...then it had another attack! This year in January it suddenly stopped working after I did some seascape, and has a splash from a wave "get me". I cleaned it inside and out, let it rest for a few day...and BINGO...she drew in new life. I am very seriously considering moving up to the K-1 or the K-1 Mark 2. For the first time in my camera life...I did a shutter count. Is my time up?

Have you updated the firmware during all of this?

I believe they never found the cause of the problem, but did write a check into the firmware that would stop it if it was detected happening again.
(not the ideal solution, but better than nothing)

You're nearing 100,000, so getting up there. I believe the mechanism is rated at twice that, but as always anything could fail before that particular component does.
In terms of resale, you can pass a point where it's just as worthwhile hanging onto it and running it into the ground.

In terms of sheer capability, the K-3 is still relevant today. In a lot of ways Pentax haven't released anything dramatically better since. There are mkii versions of both the K-3 and K-1, but the K-3 is still more than capable. Many would argue so is the K-5 from before it as well, but I think the K-3 places you in the modern Pentax world still, despite being quite old now.

Remember the K-3 and K-1 have quite different focuses. Ha photography pun there... The K-3 has a large buffer and a fast burst rate, making it the most suitable Pentax for sports/birding, where as the K-1 is FF and more focused on image quality/lower light use. I think they complement each other more than they compete.

Plenty of life in the K3 yet in my view....

Not sure of my shutter count Judith Ann, but I've had my K-3 for about 5 years now and I've experienced the crazy shutter flapping a few times. I've come to the conclusion it is related to low battery power, it behaves itself again when the battery is replaced. I would think yours has plenty of life yet, the shutters are rated at least for 200,000 shots.

I'm not looking to upgrade my K-3 or K-5iis, I don't do commercial photography, I don't display in galleries or exhibitions, it's just for fun. I don't think I'd get any more fun shooting with a K-1, plus I would have to spend a lot of money on new lenses.

You wouldn't get tired arms either carrying full frame equipment....lol

My K3ii is a baby by comparison at 7662 and the only time I've had a shutter fright was when using a cable remote with the camera set to 'continuous burst'. 1st click, off it went, 2nd click, then frantic clicks and presses of shutter release failed to stop it ! I had to turn it off manually at the switch. I have no desire to buy a K1 because the K3 is a super camera. (ignore the video - I have no use for it anyway).

Thank you all for your input.... I am still planning to use my K3 for a while.... but I do think I will eventually go full frame!
I updated this week making sure I have the latest and greatest. I just bought the 70 -200 lens, it is a big brute, with great work ethics... sharp, as a pin! LOL

Just checked my K-3 which I bought in October 2014. It's at 22,696 so has a way to go yet. Fingers crossed: I've never had the problem mentioned. It has worked flawlessly since I have had it. Hopefully, that's not its death knell.
