I've just had this picture of preserved Class A4 steam loco Dominion of Canada published in the monthly magazineHeritage Railway.
My photo was taken as the engine crossed the Pennines on the A66 at Stainmore summit on a low loader on its way from Liverpool Docks to Locomotion steam museum at Shildon Co. Durham.
It made news earlier this month when it and sister loco Dwight D Eisenhower where shipped to England from museums in the USA and Canada on temporary loan to the National Railway Museum. They will take part in a historic line up next year of all six surviving members of the A4 class to commemorate the world speed record for steam power being established by Mallard 75 years ago.
The A4 class were the front line express steam power on the East Coast Main from the late 1930s through to the end of steam power in the mid 1960s.
The transfer of the two engines on temporary loan to the National Railway Museum was masterminded by former museum boss Steve Davies and heavy transport expert Andrew Goodman. Andrew kept me updated by mobile phone on when the slow moving load was expected at Stainmore.
The engines were shipped from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Liverpool and then by low loader to Shildon.
Dominion of Canada is to be repainted to its original LNER blue at Shildon and Dwight D Eisenhower will receive a fresh coat of British Rail green at York. Both engines are static exhibits and are not in working order.
