Just had yet another phone call from the asian branch of microsoft tech support, yes really!!
Instead of me confusing them and just asking them if they would like my bank details. They get all panicky and hang up! This time i did what they asked.

WinKey+R type in P R E F E T C H
Then they tell me what I'm looking at is scary virus stuff, it's not. Then they told me to delete it. next step

WinKey+R type in E V E N T V W R
They then tell me all the errors there are very scary!

He then handed me over to his senior tech advisor. who wanted me to

WinKey+R support .me

This open's up logmein123 .com, with a login box thats asking for a 6 digit number, which he gave me.

I asked him "Do you think I'm that stupid?"
He replied "Yes"
I was laughing by now, he hung up!

This has happened about 6-7 times now. Now the funny thing is I've been having problems with my laptop about 3-4 of them times, problems that had me scratching my head.

Just a heads up. If you didn't know your Ram form your Lamb you could be in trouble.

I asked him "which computer has the problem?" He said the one you use at home . I again asked which one? I have 3. He asked me to switch on. I again said which one. He said your windows computer. I told him I only used ubuntu. He called me a liar. I agreed and he hung up. Basically I kept him talking as long as possible to make his phone bill bigger as I was woken from my afternoon nap and was feeling grotty.
CHEERS Vic.

I've had similar - they said there was a report of a problem with my IP address. So I asked them so as to check security what my IP address is. Of course they haven't a clue!

Oh I really enjoy them

I get about 2 or 3 a week .

I let them rabbit on and it's always along the lines of my windows machine is sending them messages .

'Oh ' say I ' really ? '

The I'm sometimes asked to switch on my machine - so I ask which one ?

Then he again says the windows machine . At this point I sometimes ask when it last sent them a message .

Now tt this point 1 of 2 things happen :-

1) Phone is put down on me - they have realised that I have twigged

2) they say my machine sent a message yesterday

result of that is that I tell them it's not been switched on for 3 months

Phone is put down at their end .

Just realised - I'll have to change my script if they phone again this week

I had to take my courage in both hands and actually boot up the PC yesterday so I could renew the AV on it , didn't enjoy the experience and it won't be switched on again now till mid July .

I let them tell me what to do, then I invest some kind of "unusual" occurence, like "Oh my!!... I've never seen that happen before! - do you think I have a virus?". Of course, I'm just randomly typing on my keyboard! I then invest several other scenarios, basically to p**s them off!!

Never had one of these. All we get is scam marketing survey calls, even though I singed up to the TPS years ago

We don't get any of theses calls, or rather if we do they are not getting as far as the phones.

I got so fed up with unwanted sales and scam calls that I bought a True Call unit which I have installed in front of the base unit for our set of 4 DECT phones. This can be set up in varying levels of defence from just blocking a list of unwanted callers to asking all unknown callers, including people not on our friends list, withheld, international and unavailable callers to identify themselves.

We have been using it for nearly a year and I love it. I have just renewed the, perhaps slightly expensive, annual subscription for the web interface, which while not completely necessary makes it much easier to configure, manage the list of friends and foes and see who, if anyone, got blocked.

As we are currently expecting to receive withheld calls from our health centre and hospital for the moment we currently have it in a simple mode where it only blocks calls on the unwanted list, any internationals calls (we don't know anyone abroad that we expect to call) and any unavailable calls.

Anyone that gets blocked receives a very polite rejection message. I have seen reports that some local councils and some organisations use "unavailable" but that if they can't get past this sort of filtering fall back onto their mobiles which of course we can filter/pass using the friend/foe (zap/star) lists.

If BT hadn't chosen the wrong system for Caller ID a lot of
computer software could have been used. Most of it's available,
but just won't work on BT. i.e. software that pops up a picture
and says "Bob's Calling" etc. Some even pops up on your TV.
