Jessops bad attitude

So I was in Merry Hill the other day, and happened to wander into Jessops whilst SWMBO was in one of many clothing emporiums visited that day.

They had the new Nikon J1 and V1 on the counter to try, so I thought I might as well have a play.

The sales assistant had obviously been told to lay it on thick about the Nikon 1 ("it's the best camera available today", etc.), whilst also telling people that they would need to buy a £50 memory card with the camera otherwise it would be borderline useless (despite the fact I was happily reeling of 60fps with my Class 6 jobbie).

Someone in the shop pointed out that they liked the V1, but wished it came in more colours. I said that had it been made by Pentax it would be available in every colour under the sun, to which the sales assistant responded "Yeah, but if Pentax made it, it would be a piece of s**t". I had to call him up on this, I asked how he'd come to that conclusion. Funnily enough he had never shot a frame with a Pentax camera, he just didn't trust them as they weren't made by a big, reputable company.

30cm behind his head was a K-r twin lens kit...

I find it amazing how Pentax has gone from a world class camera manufacturer to a piece of s**t in less than a generation.

Quite some going really.

I'm inclined to think that if people's opinions are so ill-informed they should keep their mouths shut. This goes times 100 for people in a position to influence the decisions of others (such as a Jessops sales assistant).

I try to steer clear of expressing opinions on things I know nothing about - and in my particular job I'm NOT ALLOWED to express personal opinions even on things I know a great deal about. To break this rule is quite literally a sackable offence. (I work in the financial services industry, where expressing opinions could be construed as giving advice, which is against FSA regulations and can land individuals and companies in pretty big trouble). The Jessops guy should try doing my job for a while. It's a great way to teach you to keep your mouth shut.

He was a complete idiot.

He had been harping on about the J1 for about 10 minutes while I was playing around with it, when I asked him "How do you change the aperture" (I knew, I just wanted to see if he did).

His response....

"Oh, you can't"!!

If everyone shared this philosophy, the world truly would be a better place.

Always worth asking sales people, right at the start, a technical question to which you already know the answer, just to see if they either know the answer, or will admit that they don't know the answer or will just lie to you, pretending that they know the answer

I actually had my tablet with me in store too, so I was able to immediately review the out of camera quality of the J1/V1.

I wasn't blown away by the images (highest quality JPEG setting), and mentioned this to the sales assistant. "Oh, that doesn't matter" he said, "not when you can shoot at 60fps".

Awesome, I get to fill my memory card with average pictures really, really quickly.

My favourite technique.

Helps separate the wheat from the chaff!

I asked him whether he would recommend the Nikon 1 or Micro Four Thirds. He laughed as if I'd asked a stupid question and said "The Nikon 1 destroys Micro Four Thirds in every way imaginable".

I pointed out that in terms of fast glass Micro Four Thirds has a number of options, whereas the Nikon 1 doesn't. His response:

"The Nikon 1 lenses focus much faster than any Micro Four Thirds lens. If you want fast lenses, you have to go for Nikon 1".

The sales assistant sounds like a 'total plank'

Shame that you were not able to record him and put the result on YouTube

Maybe the Jessops sales assistant should have pointed out that you will get faster glass "if you drive a Ferrari F430 Spider at the same time"

I'd personally have spent ages getting the guy to demo several of the most expensive cameras available, leading him into thinking he was about to get a sale (plus a boost in his commission, no doubt!), then reach for my wallet teasingly, and ask him for a cheap kodak/fuji disposable number!!

Meeeee baaaaaaaaaaad!!

You know Hyram, you may have given me a little task for this weekend...

I'm actually quite tempted by this, except I could teasingly reach for my wallet and bring out my Jessops voucher for 50 free 6x4 prints!

Winner!

For those of us who have enough experience/ knowledge to spot the - shall we say limitations - of this salesman and his ilk - he/they are an annoyance and occasionally in my case a source of amusement and fun - especially if I am in the mood to toy with them a little - usually if there is an audience.

It is the potential customers without the experience and knowledge I feel sorry for who may end up spending a lot of money needlessly on something wholly unsuitable for them.

Anybody old enough to remember the old "Not The 9 O'clock News" sketch about the guy who goes in to a hi-fi shop to buy a gramophone? they satirized this sort of salesman brilliantly (no - just me again eh).

It's also unfortunate that we tend to equate the person with the company they work for. I have not been in to a branch of Jessops for years - but did so a couple of weeks ago to pick up a 50mm 1.4 whilst they had them on offer. I have to say that the guy who served me was very good. He even told me that he was a Nikon user and wished that Nikon made something as good as the 50 1.4 for his D300 - said he had paid over £400 for the Nikon equivalent and in his view the Pentax was a better lens. He did look over his shoulder as he said it though to make sure nobody heard him

Was he telling the truth? who knows but it was the right thing to say.

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

To be honest I find going into a store expressly to prove my superior technical knowledge equally tragic....
