Jessops and Pentax - again

I wish Jessops would tell the full story about why they do not stock Pentax. They claim that Pentax are refusing to supply them - but not why.

If that is true, then why do Jessops have over 300 versions of Hoya filters available?

Surely if there was a good reason for Pentax not to supply Jessops then their sister company would see the same evidence and arrive at a similar decision.

There are so many stories and rumours around plenty of them, (some may be pure invention) - someone needs to set the record straight. We have read or heard most so I will not repeat them.

Hoya and Pentax might be supplied via different routes in the UK and different companies might be issuing the invoices. This won't have changed overnight from when Hoya and Pentax were unconnected as there will have been exisitng contracts with distributers.

Jobs slashed at Jessops, and the slipy slop started 17 stores to close

Read about it here.

On AP web site....

Jessops update, Most of the 17 stores to close are North in Scotland (full list here) http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/news/Jessops_releases_store_closure_list_ne...

130 jobs will go.
I know that some of the workforce did not know one end of a camera from the other, but it's 130 jobs down the tubes.

Think about it: Big PLCs are failing right, left and centre. Would you risk supplying a few hundred grands worth of photographic equipment to someone who on paper doesn't have the ability to pay? Maybe Jessops are simply bad payers and Pentax opted to do without the risk.

They haven't mentioned the store in Parliament Street, York, it was there 4 weeks ago but not last Saturday.

Seems that J's are closing 'duplicate' stores as well and not reporting the fact.

I feel it's a good, though not popular decision on behalf of Pentax, they seem to be putting more effort into supplying independent stores in my area. Which means I have to shop harder to find them, but it makes the effort worthwhile.

There used to be three shops in Leeds, now just one.

Yes Bradford had three, the best closed when Forster Square was demolished, followed by the worst in the last twelve months.

We only have one left now, like Leeds and York.

These cuts don't seem to have made the papers, J's must have some really good PR men!

You mean that the canikony fan club mags have the details.

I really do read them nowadays, from cover to cover, if I can get away with it in W H Smiths.

Read "View camera" magazine. Not a Canon in sight, but a few Nikon lenses. Sadly, Pentax never made lenses for them.

Best wishes, Kris.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Since going on an ebay binge a few months back I've stopped getting comics.

I seem to keep on top of things through t'internet and this forum.

Occasionally I do buy Amateur Photographer, it depends what the articles are.

Well done Jessops!

Over 10 years, you bought up about 75% of all the independant photo stores all over the UK, turned them into computer shops with spotty youths who new very little, then made several bad decisions re stock and pricing so the many previously successful shops will now fail to exist...

...personally I would not supply anything to them...UNLESS they paid COD.

Could we see a return of the independent camera shop, like SRS?

Success is simple. Have a shop in an easily accessible location, employ knowledgeable unbiased staff, stock kit that people want to buy, and sell it at a competitive price.

Oh, I forgot to mention, you'll need a shed load of money to start with unless you can find a bank to borrow from
