producing postcards & greeting cards

I would like to convert some of my images in to postcards and greeting cards for my local shop. I am looking for advice on where I can buy raw materials in the UK for these purposes. I guess I would print them myself on the inkjet. I would be just printing out the images on to 6x4 or 5x3 photopaper and then fixing them some how to the bought blank cards. Also what is the best way to display a title and photographers details.

I'm sure I've seen printable postcards & greetings cards in Staples. Might look more pro than regular prints stuck to a plain card. Not sure on price of them though.

Have you thought of getting them printed instead of doing it at home ?
Depends on the quantities you are thinking about I suppose, but it could turn out more cost effective that way.

I've not managed to source photo quality post card blanks but have found that Fisco's Environmental 6x4 Photo paper is the heaviest paper around (270g/m2)with no manufacturer's logo/watermark on the reverse side. The reverse side bleeds a bit if you use an ink jet - yet to test with a laser. PC World stock it (when they have any stock.....)

The card for my small Canon printer is gloss on one side and postcard format on the other. The printer is a sublimation one and the "ink" is water resistant/waterproof I think - well worth a look at the more recent Canon Selphy printers

I don't think it's a great way to sell postcards - the prints will fade and the cost in terms of ink and the toll on your printer will be too high.

Try inexpensive printing solutions such as Vistaprint and Able Labels and I think you'll end up with a much better product at a lower unit cost.

I was wondering if I should mention Vistaprint who I have used for promotional postcards. They are nice firm cards although I suspect like many postcards the colouring isn't subtle.

The trick with Vistaprint seems to be;

To register
To select a product - in your case postcards
Set it all up and go as far as getting prices
Save for later
Wait
You'll get a better offer in a week or so by email
Wait more or fiddle about with your saved item
You'll get a better offer
Repeat until they go rock bottom!

In the end I got 100 postcards for a fiver delivered which can't be bad. Full colour one side B&W the other.

Got me two small jobs which paid for them anyway. I used to run them through my ink jet printer for addressing mailshots and adding specific information.

You were done! I've never had to pay at all. I do use them for other stuff asa well though.

Come on you must have paid the delivery which is what I paid - otherwise I'm gutted!

I'v used Vistaprint for Post Cards, Buisiness Cards, and just ordered some Tee Shirts with company logo on, they are worth a try and there prices are reasonable.

You can try ArcSoft products (just google the name to get it). You'll get templates for cards of any kinds as well as photobooks.
