The last time I was in Jessops I asked for a Hoya Pro Polarising filter to be told by the spotty youth 'But that's only for professional photographers'

As I'm being made redundant at the end of March and have been looking around for a job I did look on Jessops website to see if they had anything.

They're so clear on that point they stated it twice! Depressing. When I was in the same position as you last year, I looked at an advert for a 'baby photographer' for an specialist agency. Again it stressed that no photographic knowledge was required - I suppose they would rather start with a blank slate and 'program' you to take pictures their way.

Scary ad Alec - it proves that most industries are now run by bean counters and there is less and less skill at any level - viz my own ex-industry - catering - I despair !
Remember it is the JOB that is redundant NOT you - happened to me at 47 and at 49 - and it was scary - do not discount or refuse ANY job - the experience will be useful one day,the routine invaluable, and the best way to find a new job is to be in the workplace.I went back to college ( collage ? ) as a trainee lecturer - FAETC - and got an 18 month tenure as a catering manager/head chef through one of the staff there.
Welcome to the PUF and good luck to you.

Alec? I was also made redundant recently I was told about it in Nov last year and finally walked end of Jan. I was called out of the blue @ 9.30am on the folowing Monday 1st Feb and started a new job on Monday just passed. I spent 1.5 hours without a job. The rest was just a 2 week holiday. Miracles DO happen. Do you have a portfolio? Blog? Website? You never know if there's someone here who could help.
On topic - I have met ONE photographer working in Jessops, ONE. The rest? They are unsupported, untrained, poor amateurs. I really do feel for them. A nationwide company cannot employ passionate people? do me a favour! There are plenty of them around. They (Jessops) don't look like they give much of a **&^
In short, Jessops + bargepole.

Mike - George is quite right to be concerned. Compressor oil is not cheap and should not be wasted on lenses.

I really wanted to handle one as they cost £1700
I suppose this is like buying a new TV, you want to see one working first
Having said that I bought my istd at Focus, didn't bother to handle it, I bought both my K10&20D fro SRS by post, never handled either.
The good thing about Pentax cameras is you know they will feel good and handle well.
Jessop obviously stock the wrong brands, I wonder whne they'll start selling boxed Tellys
