My ist DS seems to use a lot of batteries. Does anyone know whether this is normal or do you think there is a fault.

6.1mp is less than today's dSLR sensors, but the camera is as capable of exceptional images today as it was in 2004. MP's aren't everything and at 3008x2000 pixels images (from the 23.5 x 15.7mm sensor) are fine for even LF printing.
I have a 50" example on my wall which is superb.

I use 7day shop "Good to Go" recharge with my istDL. They seem to hold their charge well and aren't expensive. I just make sure I have two fully charged sets before leaving home.
