K-5 AF Speed test in "machine gun mode"

Ok, quick test of the AF speed on the K-5 this morning. Was in centre spot focus, AF-C and FPS priority. These were taken with the DA* 60-250mm f4 which isn't the fastest focusing lens in the world .. may try with the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 another day.

Not much processing, just a slight sharpening as they were all shot raw

I think the last couple were probably down to the dog being too close for the lens. Think I need a bit more practice but the results look better than I thought they would.

Indeed. Given the available evidence there's a marginally higher chance that it will rather than won't at the moment. However given the accompanying amount of noise about it I'm confident the issue will get resolved more quickly than it would have done 'pre-Internet.

Anyway, faults aside the K-5 is clearly a winner IMO. I had no interest in buying a k-7 to upgrade my K20/K10. Different ball game now

Dang!! Very impressive. I could not get anything like that with the DA* 16-50. I have been unable to focus at all by the time the dog reaches me.
Of course, I suppose further away subjects should focus more easily - less focusing difference from point to point. ??? I may need to try with my longer lens once it gets back from the shop.

Good stuff Mike. I need to try this myself, all I need is a dog

So what do you think of FPS mode?

Considering the speed he was running I think the camera did pretty well, especially as he was coming straight at me (which is apparently the ultimate AF test). I did try focus priority but it just couldn't keep up with the dog.

Having done this test Mike which mode would be best would you say for using the K-5 at an airshow?

You could get away with focus priority as the planes are normally flying past and you are panning with it rather than them coming straight at you. Would probably use the 5 focus point option rather than centre but not sure how well that works yet.

Yup, probably the best Pentax to date.

Not checked the lens for back/front focus yet so maybe that would help, along with a faster shutter speed.
