None of the 64 buttons on my Sony MD recorder's remote fire my ist D. A pity because I have a job tomorrow where it would have come in very handy.
My mini-disc recorder is a Sony MDS-12.

Ardent,
The remote control does not focus, even on the real one! (It's in the manual )
When I get a moment I'll connect the Pentax IR remote to our storage oscilloscope at work and see what it's sending out. Maybe the codes can be programmed into a One-for-All, Palm, or Pocket PC

Okay dokay
For those technically minded...
The remote generates bursts of pulses at 26us cycle (which is the normal 38kHz carrier). The ON-OFF sequence is:
* 13ms ON, 3ms OFF
* 1ms ON, 1ms OFF x 7
Then, all the while you hold the button down, it generates:
* 4ms ON, 246ms OFF
I'm trying to find out the One-For-All codes for their remote controls
Using IR Remote for the Psion http://www.geocities.com/jpollock_2000/infrared.htm I found that an RC-5 code 000 will sometimes trigger.
I'll keep you posted.

Hats off to Matt. No use to me, but well impressed with the IR breakdown. As you say pays to read the manual a bit more carefully. Shame no auto Focus but I think I said in first post even if it did, you would not know what it was focusing on if you was not looking through the viewfinder anyway. prefocus and zapp away.
For malcolmk
The remote I am using is for a MDS JB 940 QS. Have not counted the buttons.

I've just tried my Sony Clie Palm device.
Using the CLIE RMC (remote control program) setting it to a sony DVD type 1, I can press the 10+ button and trigger the camera.
Now all we need is a Palm programmer who will write a dedicated trigger module. If we can get a Java Midlet programmer it could also run on mobile phones with IR.

The burst cycle that Matt describes corresponds to the following Philips Pronto IR Code:
0000 006C 0008 0001 01F0 0073 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0099 250D
This works fine triggering my K10D using my Pronto.
I know that there are various other learning/programmable remotes that can utilize Pronto IR codes (sometimes after conversion by a utility application), so hopefully this will prove useful to others.
Cheers Matt!

If you have a Palm, this may help,
http://ok1000.blogspot.com/2006/04/pentax-ir-remote-from-your-palm-device.html
If you have a Palm Tungsten, the IR beam is quite strong, and I have been able to fire the DS and the K10 from more than 40 feet.

I just found out that the remote for our TV fires my DS.
What is a nice extra feature, it DOES activate the autofocus. When I press the '0' button on the remote the camera focusses until it gets a focus lock and then immediatly fires the shutter.

What make and model of TV? With luck I can pull the remote codes for it from the internet and see if a) it does the same on the K10D and b) is there a pattern that might enable more codes to be found...
cheers,

Ok, looks like that will be RC5 code 0,0 (just like Matt said above sometimes works).
I presume it's sometimes because RC5 has a modulation of 36khz, not 38 and the bits are ~0.85ms on then 0.85ms off. Close to the pentax code, but not exact. RC5 doesn't have the long intro that the pentax sequence has, but it will have at least more of the ~1ms on/off repetitions than needed.
Interestingly there's this code on remote central marked up as wide/mid/tele for pentax cameras
0000 006E 0008 0000 01EE 0072 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0026 0072 0026 0026
This is roughly the same as Matt's sequence, but with a long 'off' in the 2nd to last repeat. I wonder if the 7 on/off repeats encode 7 bits of info, with a zero being ~1ms on, 1ms off and a 1 being ~1ms on, 3ms off.
That would give me 128 codes to try to see if they do anything interesting

less geeky but true... the remote that came with my Espio mini 12 years ago seems to work with all current Pentax cameras, and its still on the original battery.
Back to geekiness... some mobile pnones can be used as IR remotes, any ideas Matt?

Can't you "teach" it the code from your Espio remote??Back to geekiness... some mobile pnones can be used as IR remotes, any ideas Matt?
(I too have an Espio remote that works a treat )

Messing around the other day found that the remote to my sony minidisc fires the Ist D when in remote mode. numerous buttons fire it. Only fires though could not get it to focus. but set tit all up and fire away works certainly up to 8m away.
might be worth a look to anyone who has sony gear. Also tried with Aiwa, toshiba and mitsubushi remotes. nothing.
