I thought also that ISO makes a difference ....ie higher ISOs equal smaller files....?

No, the other way round. Higher ISO = larger file sizes.

Sharp files are bigger. Pentax probably assume that you will be getting shots that are sharp.... in focus etc.

I believe the speckles of noise are effectively like more detail and so larger file sizes.

I have wondered about an odd item in the 'info' section when displaying images in Faststone Image Viewer. It is "No of colours", which will obviously vary by image. Now I can understand why it is there (maybe?).
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
