i-Berg - Partridge`s Dictionary of Slang is a winner too - great reading and lots of surprising words we now take for granted.

All this talk of getting old is worrying me - my body is getting old but my mind is getting sharper,my system is getting weaker and my memory a little less sharp,should we not just adapt accordingly ?

I sleep all year round "sans vetements",I gave up the pipe 10 years ago and prefer Crocs to slippers or just bare feet.Texting ( NOT predictive )is done as per the English language without exception and sloppy writing/spelling/usage infuriates me.
Sadly we live in a world of "referendums" and "stadiums" rather than referenda and stadia - must be the Latin I hated at school coming back to prod me !
I concur with the back,legs,muscles and other weakening parts,teeth,eyes and ears are getting suspect but the taste buds are still in full operation.I live with a beautiful 65 year old who does weekly French,Tap dancing,Yoga,Golf,Badminton and Housework ??? So no pressure there then !
As long as we grow old disgracefully we should be ok - another glass ??

I AM enjoying this thread. It's good to read that there is a backlash, albeit small, developing against sloppy English.

My visits are rare these days for two reasons. First, I have had very poor internet reception in the past few months; and second, I have less time available for simple pleasures than I used to.

It's not that my simple pleasures have been replaced by more sophisticated ones (indeed, quite the reverse), but more that I have less time for anything much, apart from matters marine.

However, as I wend my weary way towards the Great Wen the internet situation is getting gradually better, and I hope to drop in more frequently.

More venerable members will have spotted an even rarer visitor recently - PeteKD. Brings back memories of interesting times, as the Chinese would say.

And I am still hoping for an opportunity to help out an old friend, namely Chris A, who I sincerely believe needs assistance with his whisky mountain. Don't you, Chris?

Well, that's a very noble offer, Tozza, and in normal circumstances I should be delighted to invite you to help yourself to Chris's whisky. However, I fear that there won't be enough. He has a mere thirty bottles of old Malt, and that is barely sufficient to last Chris and me, old topers that we are, for more than a couple of evenings.

Bugger I've met all three criteria for getting old, it sought of just crept up on me, a note for the slippers though, make sure they haven't got backs in they're easier to get on.

Could I just say, Noddy, that I am very fond of poetry in most of its forms, from Shakespeare to Lear, and the little ditty you quote in your signature line is one of my favourites.

Well after reading the more recent comments on this thread I have come to the conclusion I'm not that old after all. Infact I shouldn't even be using a Pentax for at least another 15 years.

Off down the nightclubs now .. stayin alive, stayin alive ooh ooh ooh.

Hmm, now that takes me back to when I used to go clubbing and there was a couple that went every Friday night .. must have been 60ish if not older.

Oh how we laughed .....

Funnily enough I grew up 50yds from a canal and that lifestyle has always appealed to me, over the years I met some very colourful characters in our local pub who much prefered life on a barge to a more urban existence. Their take on life which was basically "sod the rat race I'll do it my way". I've always admired non-conformity and a individualistic approach to life, providing it doesn't come at the expense of people around them.
