Flipping heck - that is a foreign language and I do send text messages - easier for a deaf person when out and about.

No idea what Stefan is on about either .
I send texts but not in txt spk. I spell it all out. But then so do my
kids. Even they get annoyed by their cousin, the aforementioned niece.
I text when travelling just to keep in touch with the kids, since it's cheaper than phoning.
I used to text my brothers too, but we Skype mostly now I have persuaded them to use it.
Actually looking at Stefan's message again I do understand it. Cheeky young whipper-snapper!

I don't see the issue with being able to shorten on occasion - 160 chars isn't that much.
Smthng we cud all read. But then, kids like to differentiate themselves, no?
My little one wrote some responses in phonetic English on an IRC channel this evening (normally German) and I got asked: "drunk?"
They should know better - I need to write very clean English for work, I can't turn it off at home.

On some other forums that I use, mainly 4x4 forums, the regular users have finally rebelled against the lazy text speak and lousy spelling and grammar and now actively tell people that they will ignore their posts until they write legibly. A lot of people don't like it, so they exercise their choice and leave, that's their loss not ours.
People with dyslexia ( like me ) can use spell check, and poor grammar is not a result of dyslexia.
I've seen this rebellion on three forums now, and once a few people start to protest it does have an effect on the readability of the forum.
Trying to read a long diatribe all in lower case with little or no punctuation and full of text speak is impossible for me. I just click and move on.

Everyone here would truly appreciate the book I've been reading this last weekend - Usage & Abusage, written by one Eric Partridge in 1942. It is an overlooked gift to the English language. It is still published as a Penguin paperback (and hence I'm reading it) - what an excellent gift for those so afflicted...

I think you can think off the rest yourself.
The second one is a book title.
