I have been given a box full of HP print cartridges, the problem is they are all beyond thier use by date by about a month. (i didn't know cartridges had a use by date ) Anyway i put one into my printer but it wont recognise it because of the expiry.
What happens to the ink after they have expired :
Is there a way around this or do i just put it down to experience and bin the lot.
Any help apprectiated.

I know that using my multimeter set to continuity test mode, can reset the chip in an epson ink cartridge.....just by probing two of the electrical contacts on the cartridges chip.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Thats interesting Don. How did you find that piece of information.
So it doesn't matter which 2 contacts : and keep trying until it works I guess is the procedure :

I ripped apart an old printer, to see if the peizo electric printhead could be used to vaporize gasoline to replace the venturi in a minkuni carburator to improve throttle respons/fuel effiency on a motorcycle......

ran out of money/parts/fireextinguishers before I was able to prove my theory....

Hmmm Running a motorcycle on ink cartridges You maybe onto something there

Edit. So does that mean whatever coloured cartridge you are using that is the exhaust colour :

Well that blows Don's motorcycle theory out of the water

Anyway i tried Don's fix with the cartridges but to no avail. So if anyone has any other ideas i'm listening.

Bin the lot. Why risk using degraded inks in your printer?
Best regards, John

would changing your computers date work? Fool the pc/printer that the inks were still usable?
Please call me aj,

I use a Pentax K10D, on a MacBook with LightRoom (vers 1.3 + beta 2)

Thanks AJ your idea worked I backed the date up a month and now my PC recognises them.
I was a little concerned the inks might be stale or some such thing. So i ran a few A4 print samples and the colours look fine, The inks were only just over thier use by date, if they had been a year or 2 i don't think i would have risked it.
But now my computer date is wrong. Oh well just have to live with it i guess. Thanks AJ and Don

You can get your computer time clock updated automatically via a time server, this can be set to several times a day, so you can just change the date before printing and it will get changed back later.

or you can set up a script to change the date before printing and then change it back afterwards.

Well done, a brilliant idea. This is the greatest victory for the common over corporate greed that i have heard about this year.

Didn't Epson use to do that? ( I use compats anyways)
