HP Laser printer

Been offerd one recently and wonderd if anyone has one or used one and what you thought.

Old ones were built like tanks.
Newer ones are a little easier to break.
It depends what you're being offered, for how much and what you want it to do for you.

Thanks Doug Im not sure re the model my nephew has it and offerd it free to me he recons tonner included there is around £500 worth of kit.

If its free, well the only thing to think about is space. They are not small things and also can be a little noisy.

I have a small laser for mono printing, the genuine toner costs about £75 for 2500 pages!!!! 3p per page. Most are cheaper than this usually 1.5p or so. But 20ppm and duplex. If you print off text for any reason a laser is a handy thing to have as it is cheaper than inkjet.

If you don't print text only that often it could be just be a waste of space mostly gathering dust.

Ignore the original price of the kit as once ditched by the original owner the price is largely nominal. They are glad not to have to deal with the recycling under the WEEE laws.

It would be mainly for printing photos Doug and your correct re the bulk the reason he is looking for a new home for it. His job is a photo copy engineer and he rescued it when a client wanted rid however he said it does print good photos. My problem is space I would realy like a good desktop but dont have the room here.

Under the WEEE Directive recycling of electronic equipment is the responsibility of the manufacturer, not the owner. The manufacturer is obliged to fund recycling facilities but there is no compulsion on owners to use them.

Thanks. So I have a printer from June 2005 and I'm not replacing it, who will collect it for free?

Ian, its an expensive thing running a colour printer. If you have the room and all the toners are full (four toners C Y M and Black) and you can find the drivers for your PC then why not.

Also if you have a tame engineer to fix it when it goes wrong and find you reasonable toner, its hard not to find space.

Ian, I'm sure its fine. Keep you nephew's number handy.

I've had the 2600n for a year or two, which I guess is similar to the 2550Ln? Anyway, its been absolutely perfectly well behaved and I've still to even get through 50% of any of the 4 toners cartridges. Which is just as well, because the cost of replaceing all 4 is more than the whole thing cost in the first place (got to love their marketting strategy!)

OTOH I don't use it to print photos, only documents/paperwork etc. The weight of paper does make a big difference to the quality of the output, unsurprisingly...
