How times change

I was reading an article in last weeks Amateur Photographer about taking and editing low contrast landscapes. They advised setting a low ISO speed such as ISO400... Having spent most of my photographic "career" using ISO 50 or 64 film, and thinking that BW 400 ASA film was blisteringly fast I almost had a tea-related incident. The times they are a changing...

He actually said "This will allow a low ISO sensitivity of ISO 400 or under and a small aperture to be used." i.e. 80-400ISO is the low ISO range and 400ISO is right on the limit

It's understandable that you didn't read that correctly, you probably couldn't stop laughing about Samsung predicting that they would overtake Nikon and Canon by 2015 and they were planning to release a strange range of lenses including a power zoom

I stopped getting AP a while back, but I scan it from time to time.

I know what you mean Kris, nearly all my old colour negatives are ISO 100,there are a few '200s but...

The race for higher ISO speeds has lost me!

I use auto sensitivity on my K200d, but have it capped at 400. It very seldom gets that high.

I use 200 ISO as standard, but when I get a K-5 I may up that to 400 ISO.

Most of my old negs are also 100 or 200. very rarely a 400


There's also a lot more camera shake and shallower depths of field than I would have chosen at the time.

There's a whole world of low light hand held shooting out there which I could never have got into with 100/200 ISO film.

Times are a changing ISO wise and for the better IMO. Give it 5 years and ISO 51200 will be as noise free as ISO 800 is now. I was out drive by shooting a few bights ago at ISO 4000 and f/1.4 in street light conditions. All prefocus stuff and didn't get many keepers, but shutter speeds were fast enough that keepers were very acceptable. This is with a K20. really looking forward to upping the game with a K-5

I don't get the AP article though? Surely if you're serious about landscapes you use a tripod and ISO100? I would.
