How many variants are there for "I'm new"?

Hi all, I'm new to both Pentax and SLR. Upgraded from a decent compact after finding it so inadequate at speed, low light and general customisability. Invested in a K-r with the 2 lens kit, including the 50-200mm lens. I had dreams of getting a couple more lenses, maybe a 50mm low aperture for portraits and a very wide angle for some city shots. Sadly I just don't have the cash, but I'd be grateful for any advice about budget lenses and/or places to look out for deals in the future.

Went with Pentax because you seem to get a lot more for your money and I'm on a bit of a budget at the moment (or as budget as you can be and actually own a DSLR), plus it just felt right in my hands compared to the plasticy low end Canons.

I'm from York which is a beautiful place for out and about photography, and I write for a student paper, so hopefully get some sports photography and the odd portrait shot for interviews printed in there eventually.

Anyway just thought I'd say hello!

Oh also if anyone has any favourite imaging software I'd love some recommendations, I'm hoping to not have to fork out for anything when there must be a good open source version!

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

If you don't mind manual focus, the Pentax-A 50mm f1:1.7 is something of a classic and not too expensive. The A version allows you to still select the aperture in the camera. If you have the 18-55 kit lens, is that not wide enough to get you started?

As for software I gather a lot of people use Picasa to good effect.

Yes picasa by Google is wonderful....I have lightroom which I do enjoy, but I still use Picasa a lot...and before I owned lightroom it was all I used.

Oh, Welcome to the forum...Enjoy!
