Oh also if anyone has any favourite imaging software I'd love some recommendations, I'm hoping to not have to fork out for anything when there must be a good open source version!

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.
If you don't mind manual focus, the Pentax-A 50mm f1:1.7 is something of a classic and not too expensive. The A version allows you to still select the aperture in the camera. If you have the 18-55 kit lens, is that not wide enough to get you started?
As for software I gather a lot of people use Picasa to good effect.

Went with Pentax because you seem to get a lot more for your money and I'm on a bit of a budget at the moment (or as budget as you can be and actually own a DSLR), plus it just felt right in my hands compared to the plasticy low end Canons.
I'm from York which is a beautiful place for out and about photography, and I write for a student paper, so hopefully get some sports photography and the odd portrait shot for interviews printed in there eventually.
Anyway just thought I'd say hello!
