How long will your battery last.

To really prove the point about using Live View, the K-01 only manages just over 200 shots per charge. Reason - no viewfinder! And I believe it uses the same battery as the K5.

I really wish I could work out what I'm doing wrong.

I hardly ever use LiveView, video even less, I chimp a bit but not excessively, have the LCD brightness turned down, and most of the settings that control the display time for various things set to the default or less.

Yet, with a Pentax battery and a knock-off, I only get about 150 shots per charge.

I use an Eye-Fi card mostly, which presumably must use some power to ship the pictures up to the computer. But I'd noticed the shockingly short battery life long before I got it, and also with the first K-5 I had, which went back and was replaced for various reasons, also long before I'd got the Eye-Fi.

So over two K-5s, three batteries, a variety of different SD cards, the short battery life is consistent. So it's clearly something I'm doing that's different from other people.

Drives me nuts, and I have no idea what it could be.

What lenses are you using could it be the Lens antishake system or constant auto focus using the power? Clearly something is wrong.

- AF-S almost exclusively.
- Lenses most used are Pentax DA 17-70 and Sigma 50-500 OS.
- No PZ lenses
- Flash rarely

The lens OS in the Bigma would be a suspect, but I'd noticed the short battery life long before I got it.

Appreciate the ideas - keep 'em coming.

So i charge 16+, then 8hour then, again 8hour,then 16hour after battery full used each time.
So battery gets charged 16+,8,8,16+.
that works for me.

I doubt its the Bigma, I was expecting it to use lots of power but I have the Bigma fitted 90% of the time and the battery still seems to last for several days shooting 200 plus photos a day.
Also I dont think the Bigma uses any power with the camera in auto off or manualy shut down, I have forgotten to switch the camera/lens off many times and it hasnt made any noticable difference to battery life.
Have you tried another charger, it wouldnt be impossible that its not fully charging the battery?
If you like I could check the terminal voltage of one of my batteries after a recharge and after say 20 photos to take off the battery surface charge and you could compare yours. PS my camera is a K7.

Now there's a thought. Haven't thought about that one since I returned the original K-5, which did have a different charger.

I'd be much obliged if you would, thank you.

No idea how many on my K-5.
My policy with modern batteries is to keep them topped up. The moment the indicator shows less than full, I swap in the spare and charge.

Yeah could be the charger. Get a 3rd party charger of Ebay. They work as well as the pentax charger here

I've found several, but they seem to have just two contacts, not three.

Is that relevant? What's the third contact with the D-Li90 for anyway?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the third contact is to give feedback from the battery to enable the charger to stop charging when the battery is full. It's a bit more sophisticated and perhaps protects from over-charging.
Best regards, John
