How deep are you prepared to go?

Yeah David I had a fall before getting the picture of Dunstanburgh Castle in my gallery. Luckily my rucksack broke my fall otherwise I think I would have ended up with a head injury. Also lucky that none of my gear in my rucksack was damaged.

Haven't done much on rocks since, but my thoughts are to take a pair of old trainers for walking on those, and accept that when I get to where I want to be, then my trousers will need to be rolled up and they'll still probably get wet.

For actually being in the water I have considered waders. Don't want to go chest deep, but with wellies, it just takes a small wave when in calf deep water, for it to come in over the top

Studded chest waders just the job on rocks used them for 35 years sea angling. Trainers are a no no on wet rocks accident waiting to happen.

Just now done a search for studs to put in my wellies - if the sole is thick enough.

Check the length -- there are 3/8" and 1/2" studs. The shorter tend to be OK but the longer can go right through.


As for "Easy insertion" - no! The soles tends to be very resistive to them, I find a small pilot hole 1/8 deeps is needed to start them off.

Do not know of fitting studs into the soles Alan but i used to get my studded waders from the chandlers on fish quay at Shields they may do studded wellies for the trawler men.

I've often wondered if it's true, you slip off a ledge into deep water and go upside down, will the air trapped inside the waders prevent you from getting upright again. Answers on a postcard please

One of the greatest "Dancing on Ice Acts" I witnessed at sea was one of the deckhands trying to walk and stay upright on a steel deck wearing studded wellies. We used to start counting as soon as he stepped onto the deck and neve got past 7 before he was down. Imagine a new born foal etc trying to stand for the first time and you get some idea
