The first one is very intriguing! I like it. With the last one, I like the way the statue is picked out by the light and the fact you have given it context. Good work.
If you want me to be picky, my complaint about the second one is the you have tipped the camera up a little to get more ceiling in, but have thereby created "converging verticals" which is a particular bug-bear of mine. If you look at the walls near the edges of the frame you can see they are sloping inwards. I would have kept the camera absolutely level even if it means cropping away some featureless floor. As it is, you can correct for this in the software if you wish. Also, I am not sure how easy it would be to do but I would be tempted to clone out the bright red fire extinguisher. I hope you don't mind my comments, I only make them because I think a lovely shot could become a really lovely shot!
I hope you are enjoying the course.
Best wishes, Kris.

OK - what was it ? Hmm hard to describe
The class the night before had been a practical one - we went over to the brand new College main building - full of curves and odd angles and curved windows and bright colours and told to get what we could - we were supposed to be using Tripods , but since I don't expect to be using one I opted out of this I got some amazing shots there plus some rather abstract ones as well - there were about 50 taken in an hour !
Our homework was to find an interesting building or Park and do the same sort of exercise - so i went walkabout in the museum and just enjoyed myself .
The pics you see are straight out of the camera - we are expected to show him them in that state - though I'll admit to having straightened a couple in the series - I didn't realise how badly out of true they were till I saw them [ I'll confess to them ]
I'll agree about the tipping up of the camera - as I liked the way the light in the roof recesses affected things . The fire extinguisher - yes - well it does spoil things but once i've got PSE and Bridge set up properly I'll duplicate the pic and have a go and see if I can get it out .
The disembodied heads are fascinating - I've got about 4 shots of them - with different colours The uplighting changes every few minutes and the differences between the lights is very striking.
The course is great - though I have realised that what we get every week is not what he told us the week before what we would be doing . This week we are supposed to be talking about use of Flash so we are to take our flashes in with us - change of bag tonight so I can .
His avowed intent is to get us enjoying taking pictures - and I've gained a huge amount already . I've gone from the K-x being always on Auto to it now being 90% or more on Av and I'll change to Tv if I feel it necessary.
So far on the course I've taken 2.72GB of jpegs !! and there's 5 more classes to come
I welcome constructive criticism - but with it there must be a reason given - so I can think about it . Till now I've done very little 'tweaking' after the shot - I like to try and think about it first - but many of my best ones have been opportunistic and you really just have to point , try and set it up and grab it while the going is good

They're both good shots! Nicely done The heads in the first one are fascinating!

Sounds like you are having fun and learning a lot and so the class is worth it. As to straightening images, I do that all the time so no worries there (the level crop tool in Lightroom gets a lot of work!). I don't know if it is because I can check more easily on digital, or if the difference is real, but I seem to have bigger problems getting the horizon straight with digital than I ever did with my film cameras. Very odd...
Best wishes, Kris.

I have definitely noticed this. I don't recall ever having sloping horizons on film, now virtually every shot I take needs straightening to some degree. I think it's partly smaller dimmer viewfinders, and partly I have much wider lenses now.

I think it also has to do with the sensors not always being quite as straight as they could be.
But that's what they made Photoshop for.

well - the pics [ and the ones from my classwork last week ] got the seal of approval.
He suggested the seated statue should be left as it is - but see if it was possible to remove the dratted fire extinguisher - he commented that something red seems to get in pics far too often - a car in a street , a woman in a red coat - that sort of thing 'cos the red colour stands out like a sore thumb.
He wondered about cropping the heads - and I've just tried it the way he suggested .

No Class next week - College Mid Term - so we have 2 weeks for the next challenge - symmetry - and he warned us is is very very picky about this. If you are aiming for symmetry then it has to be spot on - even to the last millimetre So far not a single thought about this - and I need 4 different examples

That's a good crop on the heads shot, a significant improvement. Like it even more now

This was his preferred one from the the practical class the previous week. He liked the sweep of the gallery ceiling and the distortion of the door.

Techno, I prefer your second, cropped headshot to the tutors choice.
I think the distorted door adds something, but I am not sure if I like its contribution.

Actually I'm not sure if this is what he wanted - but they appealed to me Just 2 out of the 80 I shot .
