Help with firmware update

Just received my K100D Super this morning and am trying to upgrade the firmware from v1.0 to v1.2.
I have copied the bin file to the root of my sd card and then hold down menu button whilst powering on the camera but the only screen I see is the old firmware version number.It doesnt go to a loading screen only starts the camera up as normal.
I even rang Pentax Tech Support and was just advised to download the firmware again from Japan......still no workeeeeee.

I am missing something here surely but I am pulling my hair out with this problem.

Are you sure you formatted the memory card before you started :
If you left even an empty folder on you card and extracted the file into the folder the camera won't read it.

Also i assume you downloaded the self extracting file to your computer harddrive first(save to your desk top so its easy to find) and then extracted the bin file to your memory card. You can then install it onto your camera by turning the camera on while holding down the menu button.

Make sure you have a fully charged battery and delete the file from your card when finished. Hope this helps

Hi and thanks for the help.I formatted the card in the camera but it always plonks the dcim folder on.I didnt install into that folder but to the root.If I were to format on my pc to avoid the dcim folder which fat option should I use fat16,fat32 etc?
I will try that move next.

If you can format the card on the computer (via a card reader) just delete the dcim folder. You should also be able to see the bin file, double check you have the right one and go through the install procedure again. i can't see why it would'nt work if you have followed all the instructions to the letter : :

I have tried everything even a new card.I am beginning to wonder if this firmware is suitable for the super model even though Pentax techs say it is.

I have followed everything to the letter and I am no novice when it comes to computers and firmware upgrades.

I am also wondering if the boot up procedure to start the upgrade might have been changed on this model(clutching at straws now)

Hmmm you could be right i didnt think of that. Maybe the k100d super is different. Do a bit more research.

When you check the current firmware on the camera does it tell you what version you are running. Maybe the super already has the 1.02 upgrade

Well it shows its V1.0 but that could be v1.2 renumbered for the Super.
Would like to know if anyone with a Super has done this upgrade.

Sorry i can't help, I have done the upgrade on the 100d and the K10 but not the super
I would'nt think they would change the version number though, but you never know i guess. Good luck with it though.

Since v1.2 only offers extra support for SDHC cards it is probably not an essential upgrade, and may have been incorporated into the K100DS model anyway. If it were intended for the K100Ds it would say so I think.
Unless you are intending to use SDHC cards I wouldn't worry about it.

Is the firmware you downloaded v1.02 for the K100D?

If so, I'd be very reluctant to install it on what is, no matter what the similarities, a different camera.

I get my K10D firmware downloads from www.pentaximaging.com, and the 100D Super is not yet listed there.

Hi,Yes that is correct but before I tried to install it I rang Pentax UK tech support and was told the 100d and 100dsuper use the same firmware.
I doubt that is correct though

Having rendered a PC motherboard unusable once, some years ago, as a result of being slightly too impatient, and failing to notice a one digit difference in the name of a firmware file, there's no way I would trust the word of some random tech at the end of a phone.

I think you may yet be very glad the camera didn't pick up the new file.

According to http://www.pentax.co.jp/english/support/download_digital.html there is no update available for your camera.

A safe rule of thumb is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I personally doubt that the K100D V1.02 firmware will work in a K100D Super. What is more likely is that K100D Super V1.00 firmware and K100D V1.02 firmware could be identical, so you don't need it.
