I find some HDR shots straight from the camera can be quite bland however it can work really well with some landscapes, bringing a huge amount of detail to an otherwise bland sky.

Lightroom's graduated filters do this admirably already
Personally I've not seen much HDR work I've been convinced with. At the end of the day I aim for something that represents what I saw at the time and HDR usually doesn't. Always exceptions of course.
Where the dark areas are close to the camera a little discrete fill in flash can work wonders. Particularly as our cameras allow us to control the intensity!

Hdr for some reason brings out the worst of people in photography circles. It's like you have stolen there soul the way they bang on about it.
