Happy Birthday *istD

My *istD is thirteen years old this month. So I decided to give it a run out and since it was a happy occasion I put an unused SMC Pentax-FA 1:4-5.6 28-105mm lens up front. I haven't used the body for quite a while and it's refreshingly different! It's nearly like shooting film with the images looking just like a CCD sensor should, rich colour depth and good tonal quality.

I'm well happy with the lens and will now try it on the K-1 and as for my *istD, it's a classic Pentax masterpiece.

Some lovely detailed shots with rich, natural colours. There is something about the way CCD sensors render a scene. Pity they died out. Imagine what they'd be like now with ten years of development. Most of us don't bother about video (I think) and I bet they'd have found a way to improve high ISO performance.

That's the problem with the sensors today they are trying to do to much and that means it dose a crap job
That cc'd sensor even 13 years on out strips the new one for colour quality
If Pentax just concentrate on still with a sensor of that quality
Better focusing more pixels and the iOS of today they would blow the opposition out the water bigtime

There's no difference Gary's used uncalibrated colour space anyway......
So maybe that's what you like

I don't think I've ever used a calibrated colour space on any of my images. I did have a look at the Leica comparison and have no problem with the guys results. However, when I open images from my *istD or K10 or Minolta 7D in PS, I do see a noticeable difference in appearance between those and my CMOS based bodies.

I probably will do a quick side by side test just to see what the same image looks like from both sensor types.

How many here are using calibrated colour space and what are your preferences?

No calibrated colour space here, and I miss the CCD sensor.
Sadly my *Ds died when His Nibs left it loose on the back seat of the car and braked suddenly for a Yokel Yank driving a tractor who pulled out across the road without looking. Camera went flying and died .

The postman brought me one this morning. I dusted down some CF cards, found some AA batteries and took it out to play. It looks to be very lightly used but I've no idea of its age and the EXIF doesn't seem carry any shutter count data. It did quite well with an FA 28-90 on the front.

davidwozhere, on the *ist D it is Frame Number that tells the shutter count in the EXIF.

Very briefly check that the camera menu item is set to sRGB (default) and that your editor is set not to change it on import and that any saved files are saved as sRGB.

The other alternative is to use AdobeRGB throughout, but Pentax save the files with a different prefix if you do.

If you use AdobeRGB throughout, be careful to change it to sRGB for web or colours can look very washed out. Even prints can be livened up by using sRGB.

Most browsers nowdays can handle colour correction so it doesn't matter if it's sRGB or AdobeRGB.
