Blimey - I've been following this one for the last few days, waiting expectantly for the next twist. No way did I see nipples coming!!
On a serious note, I actually thought George's opener was a good, reasoned argument and I think the result has been a general view that politeness, respect and thoughtfulness should be on the mind of all posters, whilst not getting anal about sticking to pure and precise English, Elizabethan or otherwise. Or sentences with too many commas. (Though I will miss a certain poster's more extreme outbursts - beats Corrie anyway!!)

Goodness I can't believe that this thread is still running. BTW thank you for the tip about the spell checker in Firefox Gwyn, it's very helpful to me. There was never any doubt in my mind that common sense would win out in the end. Now I do feel comfortable in this new social group.
Thanks for making me welcome & I shall look forward to taking part in many more discussions.

I am very new here, so I don't know any of the background to all of this. I've read the thread but started to lose the will to live around page 7 or 8
All I wanted to say was that George's posts generally seem to be relevant, to the point, sufficiently polite, and - most importantly - interesting. I was also fascinated by his masterful use of English in the initial post! As an aside I would also note that many of the subsequent posts were of a similar eloquence - so I think George you have at least partially achieved your goal!

Thanks to all who have replied. There seems to have been a high degree of consensus about how people think posters should conduct themselves, and I am sure we are all glad of that.

Only managed two years of compulsory Latin so I shan't be shuddering. Amo amas amat or something.
