I’m an inexperienced photographer – used more sophisticated compacts up to now – but will be investing in my first slr (probably a K100d Super) in the New Year. Can anyone recommend a useful book as an introduction to slr photography?

I’m looking for something more on the basics of slr than digital photography. I have Michael Freeman’s ‘Complete Guide to Photography’ which is quite useful on digital techniques but not very comprehensive regarding basic photographic method. I have seen his earlier ‘film’ book ‘The Image’ recommended. Is this a good place to start?

I don't know either book, but since the basic principles of photography apply as much to digital as to film, a good book from the film era will still be pertinent today.

Ignore most of what is said about filters, except for graduated flters and polarisers.

Try looking on Amazon and read the reviews. I have a copy of Tom Ang's Digital Photographers Handbook & Nigel Hicks The Digital Slr Bible both i find are very good.
