Go mad with Street Shots

I think just mad I had to try!
it was bugging me so, I did it and got it out of my system now lol.

Nope, people just don't interest me anything like as much as buildings! I do try to shoot and keep moving though as it makes you less vulnerable to muggers or jobsworth rent-a-cop types.

I did try a few shots using the following technique a while ago:

Set wide angle lens to hyperfocal length
Set aperture to f8
Hold camera at hip, try to keep it level in portrait orientation
Shoot

I was using an MG and a motor wind for this. The results were surprisingly good, although I wouldn't rely on this technique.

That's why they invented Hammerhead Flashguns

I think my old KX would be slightly more effective as a self-defence weapon...

I think NYC would be an good place to try this but I'm not sure I would do it in Worcester (or Chester Sean!)

I like the shots- but I can see why some would not. Technically flawed but he is grabbing the essence of his subject very well IMO.

I think the method is ethically very questionable. Having said that I think a lot of very good art falls into this category.

Ultimately I dont have the balls or skills to do this.

I think if I try any more candid portraits I'll be using something a little longer than the DA-70 I used at Cheshire, maybe the FA-135

Tricky stuff. Do we have the nerve to get in close with a wide angle lens? This style is intimate and intrusive.

Standing further back with a telephoto lens is less intimidating, but more remote and detached.

Confidence can be built though by starting off at events where people expect photographers to be. Such at the Whitby Goth weekends, or 1940s events.

Otherwise, just do it. But don't look furtive or nervous. Just go out there and do it. If you look the part then there will be fewer challenges. If challenged, be friendly and explain what's going on.

Is it more ethically acceptable to use a long lens and photograph people unawares? And if you get 'caught' doing that, I suspect the subject would be more upset than if you'd been braver and made your presence as a photographer known.

Act like you're photographing a general scene and let the subject walk into the frame. Or fire off a few shots of surrounding buildings and then go for your true subject. People who really really object to being photographs will give you a wide berth.

I'm sorry but I don't think these even reach the dizzy heights of mediocrity. The question 'So what?' springs to mind. What are you trying to say with theses images?

It’s my very first go at this type of photography never done this before, and I would love to see any of yours Ken? As for your comment so what! Says it all about your personality, this took me a long time to go out and try this where there were drunks and bums, I would you too see you go out and have the balls to do it before you come up with such a crappy comments.

I would also love to ask you what street photography is then Ken as i dont see any in your portfolio!. Love to here your answers,here maybe i am missing something Ken ?????

Maybe it's because they sense you don't like it?

It was very uncomfortable for both I think? I had to give it a go anyway did my best, for the first time maybe Ken can help me??
