Getting so politically correct!

Seems as though the site is becoming bitten by the ever increasing trend of not upsetting anyone - bowing to the minority - and invoking all the rules to suit

Just my thoughts, as I read some of the recent threads and the Mods comments about the use of PMs - deleting parts of threads, staying on topic, going off topic etc.
some of the deletions (mine included, were light hearted comments, we seem to have got all serious...

Whilst I respect and understand the need for "some control" I just find that I am not enjoying the web site in the same way as I did when I signed up! Probably even less if the level of interference in threads continues...

David

Is this necessary David? If you have a problem, approach us by PM and discuss it. Moderation is not discussed in public.

If you had a post deleted then there was a reason for it.
Best regards, John

An observation only - absolutely not a criticism.

Most activity related forums (fora?) I use have a number of boards for various aspects of the activity then an area where members can have a chat about whatever. We have General Chat here described as an area for open chat and yet some people still complain that non photographic topics are discussed. I would suggest that areas like this and posts like the off topic thread that actually get people communicating with each other are no bad thing.

Thanks Oggy, but I don't think we're talking about the same thing here.

Everything is taken on its own merits and every situation is different.

It's forums. Unless you are specifically talking about Roman public squares!

Quote:
forum n. (pl. forums)
1) a meeting or medium for an exchange of views.
2) (pl. fora) (in an ancient Roman city) a public square or marketplace used for judicial and other business. Origin ME: from Latin, lit. what is out of doors.

Can you quote a source for that?

I only knew because Stephen Dawkins mentions it in a recent book, but sayin 'Fora' and 'Stadia' always seemed a bit affected, as the words are now part of the English language. Oh, I love a bit of pedantry (when it's not directed at me!)

Are there any Latin words which have entered the English language which do retain the latin plural form?

Stadium = Stadia.
Refendum = Referenda. ( Although I have noticed this version of the plural dying in the last few years, in favour of referendums )

I do have a friend whose interest is languages, and he confirmed that the usual plural of forum is in fact forums. He also suggested that in this case "forum" may not come from Latin, but is derived from a Greek word.

Who did Ancient Greek at school? The Odes of Horace and all that stuff?

Anyone?
Best regards, John
