Getting so politically correct!

This has gone a long way OT, but entertainingly so. I read Latin for my degree in the 70s and studied Greek prior to that too. Hard and fast rules or views on language don't really hold good now, such is the speed of linguistic change. It's a fascinating area.

By the way, did the OP and the moderators resolve their apparent differences?

Only a week? The mods are going soft.

No less than the fate of Abelard is what I would have prescribed.

Just joking, old chap.

Easy on that dear George, the last thing we need is encouraging our mods on bans, could become addictive and in turn make them trigger happy. .

And also, your words carry a lot of weight around here and our mods could end up feeling obliged, forgetting that it was just mentioned as a joke

Good question. I hope so.

Don't mistake lots of posts for having influence. The mods are very even-handed in my experience.

Anyway, I am sure you have nothing to fear as long as you avoid a certain topic!

Oh I know that. Smoke has been a taboo subject for me, if that's the topic you mean , Particularly the coloured ones.

I have been to rehab and I have conquered my addiction, at least that's what they told me when I was let out.

Er - crumbs. One throwaway comment and all this happens. Sorry team.

John - I did Latin, but not Greek. Paradoxically, the only time I enjoyed history was when I had to translate it. I was a Hannibal fan and thoroughly enjoyed it When he gave the Romans a kicking.

Davidtrout I am with you 100% on apostrophe abuse.

The best case of apostophe abuse was a van I saw that said:

Stans Steel's

Shame I was driving, otherwise I'd have taken a shot

Surely that would have been worse without the apostrophe.

Our drive was blocked by a van back along. Final straw - it was labelled "Fred Bloggs - Electrician's".

There is a road sign near me which reads, 'new school children crossing' whatever that means.

Sorry about the fuzzy image, grabbed with a P&S out of the car window. This is in South Carolina.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

There is one in Fishguard which reads

Slow Children
Crossing
If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Apparently.

For an amusing take on the subject of Language, its origins and usage I can recommend a podcast by Stephen Fry. Titled "Language".
Available on iTunes for free.

Cheers,
