American spellings are originally due to Noah Webster's An American Dictionary of the English Language which deliberately tried to simplify English spellings and put clear water between the US and Great Britain. Thereafter, the languages evolved differently with some words being lost from English but retained in American and vice versa. I once caused giggles by using the word "fortnight" which most Americans associate with Jane Austin.
But how much did Webster actually change? I lived in the US for 4 years and I can't think of more than a couple dozen words that are spelt differently.

I am glad it was you who mentions this. I dreaded mentioning it just in case it earned me another week of ban, or may be even longer who knows.

If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Apparently.

Well yes, but I consider all those '-our' words one single change in spelling

I didn't grow up in either the UK or the US, hence my somewhat half-and-half approach to English/US spelling. For instance I think 'orientate' is a waste of an extra syllable, I prefer to say 'orient'.

And 'Dolour'? Who still uses dolour?

Glad this has gone 0T.

I have been waiting for somebody to point out that Horace was Roman not Greek. Shame on you, JR.

I think the main differences between English and American English spellings are to do with ise/ize endings, our/or words (like flavour), and past participles (like spelt/spelled).

Criterion/a and phenomenon/a are examples of words that have not yet lost their proper plurals in correct English, though they are on a downhill slope. Media is a word that continues to cause many people difficulty. Most people nowadays appear to think it is singular, whereas the singular is, of course, medium. There is no such thing as a media.

As for fora, I think it is now definitely forums in the plural, and has been for a long time (in other words, since I was a lad).

Tim beat me to it.

I still would use dolour, though I would pronounce it to rhyme with dollar, not duller.

Americans are often acclimatizated, I believe.

Nobody has yet mentioned thru. Thank God.
