Gallery questions

Can we have a 'street photography' category in the gallery please. So far I've been putting mine under 'photojournalism', but I feel like a bit of a fraud when i do so!

It would also be great if someone could make a decision about whether we can all upload 3 photos a day, or we can all upload 1 photo a day. Or is it just going to continue the way it is forever?

There is still a benefit to having been a subscriber!

Correct gareth. There are bigger things going on at the moment, but when the dust settles this can be looked at.

Bigger things have been happening at EPZ, but things have been happening here as well. The articles section, for example. It all takes man/woman hours and I guess there are only so many people.

Easy things get done quite quickly sometimes, but some requests are more complex.

A question then first - what is the difference between photojournalism and street photography?

A guess only - the former goes looking for a story, the latter for a picture?

Classic photojournalism is attached to an article and does indeed tell a story, but then that isn't possible here on PU.

I would be concerned that too many categories, both in images and forum sections, simply confuses and pictures get posted all over the place just like in the forums messages get posted in the wrong places.

I personally don't see a problem tagging street photographs at photojournalism - what else are they than what Cartier-Bresson did so well? Was he a photojournalist?

Feel free to disagree, but let's have a clear idea why we create a new section or category.

Well, I'm not a photojournalist, so I don't want to pretend I am one by describing my photos as photojournalism.

From Wikipedia: I'm not sure any of my photos fit that description. A small number of them tell a story, but not one I'd expect to be on the news

I'm a journalist, or I was until I retired. I was a wordsmith, not a snapper. I'm also an amateur photographer but I'm not a photo journalist because I don't do photo-stories for publication.
I don't see street photography as photo journalism unless it is done specifically to illustrate articles for publication in newspapers or magazines. Our street photography is not journalism.
What we call street photography would be better categorised as 'candid photography'.

Just to move away from topic (sorry John) I would like to see a change to the gallery (unless that's something you are already planning).

How about something similar to the PPG where we can rate photographs so we can have a 'best of'? We would need to be careful not to offend people, but I think there are some amazing images which you have to really look for.

I think the gallery is pretty well categorised and I agree that's it's best not to have too many.

I think many of Tim's shots would sit fairly comfortably into portraits/people (the people bit).

I do however think the Landscape/Travel section could do with a sub-category (or two). It is unwieldly at 229 pages. I think cityscape/urban, would be good. There are plenty of this type of shot in the general section, shots that don't quite fit landscape or architecture and where any people are part of the scene but not really the subject. I would personally like to see sea/beach as a separate subdivision too but I can understand why this would probably be seen as a step too far.

I don't see the need for a close up and a macro section - a combined close up/macro would suffice. Many of the shots in the close up section are macros anyway. That would save a section to be used elsewhere.

Agree about the macro and close up. I don't even know what the difference is!

I also question the utility of the 'black and white' section. And the 'stock photos' section. if we could select two categories these might be useful. As it stands they are not.

And I don't agree that portraits and people should be the same category. I'd be happy to put many of my people shots in a 'people' section, but I don't feel they belong in a 'portrait' section.

I wasn't sure what the stock photos was for. That is very a good point Tim on the black and white section. If I submitted a black and white portrait, I would put in portraits.

I love using the Gallery and visit it every day if I can there really are some great pictures posted.

One improvement I'd like to see is a method of playing members' pictures in a slide show. I really have no understandiung of how these things work and it may not even be feasible, but I'd love to be able to click on a gallery and then sit back, letting the photos appear one by one on the screen. At the moment, it's all a bit laborious.
