Funny old flickr

Being a total nerd and a "parastatistician" I am always looking at numbers of things. When I joined Flickr I did so solely to be able to post images here and elsewhere. As time has gone on I have tried to make sure the images are moderately well tagged and sorted and posted to a few groups too. I'm not in the least bit interested in all that "post 1 award 3" type nonsense but it cannot hurt to have one's pictures bought to a wider audience: the only picture I have sold was because of Flickr. I am, however, quite amused by which pictures get lots of "views" so here are some numbers:

My most viewed photograph by quite some way is my picture of "My three exes" seen here (263 views compared to No. 2 with 177).

Of my top ten photographs, 8 are of camera equipment, one is of me using my Horseman, and one is a picture (of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, NYC, as rejected by the PPG [ranked 7 with 77 views]).

Of the top 50 photographs 19 are of camera equipment plus the one of me using the Horseman, 15 are medium format film shots taken with my Lubitel 2, 10 are photos taken with my K10D/K20D and the last five are 35mm film shots.

Of the 30 pictorial images in the top 50, 17 are monochrome and 13 in colour. This doesn't reflect the balance of colour to monochrome overall.

None of this is very meaningful as the figures contain all sorts of biasses but the popularity of equipment shots and ones with the Lubitel** is really quite interesting. If you're a nerd, that is.

I was surprised by Flickr also - I used it as a way of displaying photo's on forums but got totally surprised at the photo's some people listed as favourites which are generally my test shot's whilst people seem to ignore the pnes I have taken more time and effort over

Perhaps that says more about my skill level than peoples tastes

I think is says more about all of us having to jump through hoops to get stuff onto this forum

It is perfectly normal to have to hot link photos to forums. Plenty of other photo sites you can use instead of Flickr too.

I use Photobucket - nice and easy

Views of images hotlinked from flickr (e.g., looking at them on this forum) do not count and so I have no idea what the issue is here?

I'm always surprised by what are the most popular/viewed photos when I check the stats on my sites too.

I think the title of your three exes gets people intrigued and looking - the idea you might have all three ex wives on one photo

That wasn't accidental as I am sure you realise! The popularity of the Lubitel images does intrigue me though.

Email telling her the visa is on its way arrived today. Flight booked and she will be on her way in a fortnight.

BTW, my Lubitel is one of the older ones with a real lens and no vignetting unlike the plastic "Lomo" ones on sale now. I am very pleased how sharp the lens is and I get swirly Russian bokeh when used wide open and close up. Not bad for a free camera. I have used it much more than I ever used my Yashicamat 124G. I'm on my tenth roll of 120 film since I started using it in the Spring.

An update

As I have passed 20,000 views on Flickr I thought I'd have a look at my top twenty images.

13 are pictures of cameras including the top 5
1 is of me using the Horseman
The most viewed image not of a camera is my photo of the fountain in Bucharest taken with my Lubitel 2 on HP5+
Of the six pictures, three were taken with my Lubitel, one with my Pentax ES and two with my K20D.

I just counted my views on 23hq and, like you, I find it strange what people like and will view. Still, a total of nearly 15k views on the top 25 isn't too shabby... but I have in excess of 5k pics on there in the mean time .

My most viewed pictures (by faaaar) is a pic of a K-7 taken with my old cell phone. I wonder what people are thinking about sometimes...

Yet another update

Having just passed 50,000 views I thought another update was in order. Nothing serious about this, just curiosity and a bit of fun

The most viewed photograph was taken with my K20D and my SMC-M 100mm f/2.8 lens. It was featured in Flickr "explore" which gets you a lot of exposure/views (743 in my case).

Of the top 20 images:

6 are images of cameras/lenses.
2 were taken with my digital camera, both with manual focus lenses (the above mentioned 100mm lens and an Auto Takumar 55mm lens.)
2 were taken using 35mm film (both using my MX and Kodak Ektar 100)
The remaining 10 images were all taken using my free Lubitel 2 TLR on a variety of colour and BW films.

All hail the Lubitel! Before people start moaning about "Lomography", my old Lubitel is surprisingly sharp and free from vignetting. In fact, you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference between it and my Yashicamat 124G.
