From a K10 to a KR ?

I was pretty much in the same boat, tried to part exchange my GX-10 kit with grip through SRS, but wasn't happy with their quote at £150.

So I bought a Samyang from them instead. The only thing that will replace my camera will be a K5+grip. It's the only other Pentax DSLr (that I know) that has outclassed every other brand in its generation, the first would be the K10D/GX-10.

Kept the camera, bought a faster lens.

Don't you think that the "feel" of the camera and the pleasure you get from using it is important? (Not as important as the final result, obviously, but we're amateurs and the pleasure we get from handling the quipment really matters) I just love holding and using my K10 (waited long enough to acquire one). The two control wheels are so intuitive and the LCD top screen important for what I want from a camera.

When I picked up a K-r in a shop...well, let's just say it didn't feel the same. Not at all.
I agree that the feel and handling are a very important part of the pleasure we get from photography. I really liked the size and layout of the K-7 and its successor the K-5. Unfortunately my K-5 had to go off to Johnsons Photopia and I did not get it back in time for my current Australian trip so at present I am using a K-r.

It is a nice camera - I like the small size but I do really miss the extra control wheel. After a month of using the K-r almost daily I still miss it. As regards IQ I have no complaints and my pictures are limited by my skills not by the equipment. Still I will be glad to get my K-5 back when I return from the antipodes.

And has anyone tried a part exchange at London Camera Exchange branches?

Went to LCE at The Strand, and they advised me that my GX-10 plus Grip, two genuine batteries with Kit Lens, all boxed in great condition, will net me £150.

I went from a K200D to a KX to a KR.I really missed my K200D so I have just bought one. It came wih a very clean DA 18-250 which I will be selling in the next few days.
I think they are both great cameras, and also very different.
Regards
Chris

I have now got a KR, but can it be considered as a move up as its supposed to be an 'entry' level camera?

Apart from the smaller view finder, initial impressions have been superb, the different controls are easily mastered.

The shots I've taken so far seem a lot sharper/clearer than on the K10, using the same lenses as well. I think it may have needed some focus calibration.

Anyone else similarly impessed?

I was very impressed when I tested it for EPZ.

I actually preferred the control layout to the K-5 (by a whisker) but needed the weather resistance and possibly the pentaprism finder.
Best regards, John

I loved my K10D but it broke beyond economical repair, my next camera was a K20D and I loved this but not as much as my K10D, I spent weeks contemplating getting rid of the K20D and buying a K-r but the smaller size (big hands) lack of weather proofing and the fact it was supposed to be "entry level" kept putting me off. However I took the plunge (John's review helped immensely) and I have had the camera less than a week and I'm hooked.

It has so many features but such a good menu and well placed buttons I love it and I don't even miss the second wheel!
I struggled with image quality for the first couple of days but after getting a bit of advice and lots of fiddling my photos look much better and as for taking indoor photos without using the flash its a revelation!

This is in my opinion a mid range camera with an entry level price. I'm also very impressed with both the DAL kit lenses that came with it.

I have tested the K-r and I think if you are reaching this conclusion then there is probably a fault. I would keep a K-r over the K10D without any hesitation, so maybe trying another one would be a good idea?
Just rememberd this thread I recently sent the Kr for inspection to Johnsons and after re calaberation its like shooting with a new camera. Im now happy with the focus and the IQ and at last happy with my purchase.

What was wrong with your KR and did they re-calibrate it other than using the Fine Focus Adjustment?
