I'm hoping that I have correctly understood the requirements to kick-off this competition.
The original shot used for this image was taken this morning, 07/06/12, at 09:21, before the rain set in with the following exif data:
Pentax K-5 with the Samsung equivalent of the DFA100 Marco
1/125sec, F8.0 & ISO 800 (because it dull and breezy!)
I also shot the texture which is of a woollen square knitted by my wife:
Pentax K-5 with the Samsung equivalent of the DFA100 Marco
8sec, F20 & ISO200 (Tripod mounted under lights!)
Thanks to Shaun for the tutorial which I adapted slightly for PSE10.

Here's my go. I was trying for the grungy look, but also needed a subject with texture so it's neither one thing or the other in the end. It's one of my Shorthairs overlaid with the fur from the other one and given slightly grungy colours.

Oia Archway
This was taken in Oia, Santorini on my recent holiday there. The texture used in the layer was a shot of the rocks up in the ruins of Ancient Thira the old capital. So both images fall within the time period of the comp

Barley field in disguise
This probably isn't quite what you're after but I think it makes an interesting texture. Plus you seem to be thin on entries again so I thought I'd best help out!
I tried using this as a texture layer on a shot of the Barley Store of my local brewery but I didn't feel it had enough impact. I also had difficulty getting the perspective of the texture layer to match up with the building and still look right. However, looking at it again perhaps I should have run with that one.

Firstly, thanks very much for all those that created images for this comp. I realise it was a bit different, but what the hell!
So, here are my comments and, at the end, the results.....
GlynM - Aquilegia and Knitting
Well, you certainly managed to get texture in this image! The texture and colour of the wool is a stark contrast to the flower and created an interesting effect. It's a striking image. I would have cropped the image square, personally.
milamber - No title, so I've called it Grunge Cat
I like the fact that you connected both the main image and the textured layer by using 2 cats. That, along with the coloured eyes and the crop, makes for an image that hits home. It's a little unsettling, which I like. It works really well.
tyronet2000 - Mouldy Old Dough
A clever title for a clever image. You have texture everywhere, the money, the mould, and also the surface the money is lying on. Each of those textures and colours contrasts with the others, which makes for an effective end result.
annieogg - I'll call it Letter Box!
There's plenty of texture in that wall, plus what also looks like a mould effect added. What is it with you lot? Again, it works quite well, but I might have tried to accentuate the mould by desaturating the letter box somewhat and also darkening the image, as the light is a bit harsh for me.
bforbes - Birthday Cake
This is very clever. The texture chosen converts the image into something we can all recognise, as you say, street art. An imaginative and creative use of texture to create something quite different.
JAK - Harbour Scene
First of all, I really like the composition and the light. The sepia layer gives the photo an old fashioned look, accentuated by the textured layer. All 3 work in harmony, and you could really be "fooled" into thinking it really was an old photo that had, say, been stuffed into somebody's wallet for years.
sandinista - Oia Archway
This is a great shot in itself. It helps, as I've been there myself! I like the idea that the texture was also taken in Santorini on your holiday. Nice that they connect. The rock texture does add something to both the sky and the archway, in particular. I think you have the opacity of the layer just right.
WaypointCharlie - Barleyfield in disguise
I think it's worth having a go with this image as a textured layer. I reckon it would work really well on the right photo. In itself, as an image, I like it, in a minimalistic abstract sort of a way. It's quite relaxing just to stare at it and follow the strands.
I picked out my 3 favourites, and started to have trouble choosing the winner, because all 3 shots are quite different from each other, but eventually I settled on this order.......trouble is, I had 4, so I had to have 2 3rd equals!
3rd= sandinista - Oia Archway
3rd= bforbes - Birthday Cake
2nd milamber - Grunge Cat
1st JAK - Harbour Scene
But well done to everyone!
Over to you, John!

Well thanks. There weren't too many entries this time. I think some might be frightened of processing pictures or maybe not have software to do it, or think the software they have can't do it. I think its congratulations to everyone for having a try this time so well done milamber, sandinista and bforbes in particular, but they were all good though. I guess I struck lucky having a suitable subject to go and photograph; I thought of that image almost right away but had to get the timing right to go and take it. Anyhow thanks for setting an interesting theme for those that liked the challenge and judging it with such positive comments.
I liked waypointcharlie's texture so much last night that I thought it would make an ideal 'grunge' picture to go with a photo I took on Monday on our Olympic flame day!
Hope you (wp) don't mind me sharing it - let me know if you do and I'll delete it.

It's the predominance of the blues and yellows that made me think of it.
I'll set up the next comp threads shortly and have thought that the theme 'Heritage' might be accessible to most users so hopefully it will attract more entries. We'll have to see.

Thanks for the 2nd. I quite like 2nd - almost a win without having to set the next competition!!
The eyes aren't actually coloured - that's how they are (except for the hair layer in them), but overall the fur colour is slightly browner than real life. He is actually a blue/grey. Grump Cat would be nearer the mark!

Many thanks to darkskies for setting such an interesting, topical and unusual subject. Thanks also for a nice set of reviews and probably what was some difficult, but excellent, judging.
Congratulations to John for the win and everyone else for a wonderful set of interpretations.
Great fun all-round .
Glyn
P.S. I was really taken by Barrie's birthday cake image and when I found that the brick texture was also available in PSE10 I had fun creating some pseudo graffiti although none of it looked as good as Barrie's image.

So, what I would like to see is a well composed shot with a textured layer to create an image with impact or, if you don't want to do it that way, simply a shot which portrays a texture of some sort, but with a similar impact.
Interesting, creative and strong images will do well!
Usual rules for this Fortnightly Competition. Entries close 18.00 BST. 20th June 2012.
Please remember the EXIF data!
