Please post any comments, queries or complaints regarding the competition in this thread and leave the other one purely for the entries. Thanks.

Now this could be the last fortnightly competition, so the new Monthly needs to start on 1st July to give everyone a full chance.

If you want the winner of this to start the monthly one off then the end date will need to be 30th June. Alternatively, I can start off the new monthly as a separate issue, which I think might be a safer way to get it started without any glitches.

Any thoughts?
Best regards, John

Yes, I agree, start it as something new. Maybe just have an open theme for the first one then no-one has to set a theme, and no-one has an excuse for not entering!?

Pertaining to this comp:-

Sorry to be slightly unorthodox here by adding a comment so early after the first picture has been posted. But the fact it was posted so soon got me curious. The usual rules referred to can be found in this section here and only entries photographed after the competition has been announced are eligible. So a photo taken in November last year isn't!! Also it's too big (wider than 800 pixels!)

Given you're new to all this surfhelds, and thanks for entering, however I recommend we forget that one above on this occasion (however excellent it might be) and suggest you take another especially and enter that so that all entrants are abiding the same rules!

Hope that is OK with everyone else.

John

nb I'll also post this comment in the comps other thread.

Oh sorry, I've browsed through the rules, but haven't found any of these restrictions. Sorry again.

Will keep it in mind for the next time.

Well you've got plenty of time for an allowable submission in this one still (regular users don't normally get a second chance!)

From that link you say you browsed, I quote:
1. All entries must be images taken within 14 days of the current theme being set; [ie between now and a week on Wednesday]
2. Full Exif data should be supplied with each image, including date/time of capture;
3. Image should not exceed 800 pixels width; [that applies to all photos you link to in threads but not in the weekly competions.]
4. Deadline for submission of entries is 1800 GMT every other Wednesday;
etc....

Here's the link in full:

I suspect you may be mixing up the rules for the weekly competition that does allow you to use your back catalogue. But no worries.

Is that a rule about maximum size being just 800 pixels width or is it just a guideline? I can't ever remember downsizing that much whenever I've entered in the past. I usually downsize to 1024 across and this has never been questioned.

David, as this is a normal forum thread, that 800 pixel rule applies as it does to all posts in the forum. Pictures wider than 800 pixels throw out the page alignment - the whole page gets too wide! It doesn't apply to the weekly comp that is held in the gallery section.

However, from next time, this fortnightly comp will become a monthly one and it too will be held in the gallery, so from then on, that requirement will cease to apply.

The rule has been 'policed' as a guideline thus far, particularly when it comes to 1024px images (a standard flickr size which does not really cause problems with the forum). Discretion is the better part of valour...

It depends on the size of your screen whether 1024px throws things out of kilter or not. They make the forum almost unreadable on a small screen.
